So close to being the best Greek restaurant I have ever been in that isn't in Greece - somehow a street in Reading loses out to places in the Greek countryside with their fresh local produce and views but it's still very good and, judging by the number of regulars in, it is highly regarded. Really good starters including Lamb Kofta (very tasty), Hummus ( excellent - quite an accolade from a lady who lived in London surrounded by some of the best), my own Stuffed Aubergine (very tasty but a bit lacking in flavour) and my partner's Garlic Prawns (ok, slightly overcooked, a bit short of sauce and £3 per prawn is a bit steep). The mains of Lamb Cutlets (delicious), Kalamari (tasty but not exceptional), my lady's Chicken Souvlaki (to die for, could have just eaten the rice it was that hood - I tasted both, she wasn't wrong. I had the Mixed Grill and it's the nicest meat I have tasted in this country, perfectly cooked with startling flavour. Service was excellent despite beibg very busy early on a Saturday evening. My lady's son and partner have just moved to Reading and so we most certainly will visit again., just know what doesn't work for us. Highly recommended
Revisited in October 2023 after the birth of my lady's first grand daughter so two of us ate in and two had a takeaway
I should start by saying that we were waited on by a gentleman who said he normally worked in the kitchen but someone was help up en route - he was brilliant
My lady opted for the Tirokaftera or spicy feta dip which was pretty amazing. whilst I went for the equaly impressive Pastourma which is a beef Greek version of chorizo and very tasty.
On the mains front my lady went for Chicken Souvlaki and I for the lamb version of the same. Both were really good and I would love to know what they put in thr rice to make it taste so good.
The takeaways were both lamb souvlaki and they were very very...
Read moreWe recently had a good experience at Spitiko Greek Restaurant in Reading. We visited on a Tuesday specifically to take advantage of their popular 2-for-1 main course promotion (where the cheaper main is free), which offers genuinely excellent value.
The dining room was understandably packed due to the promotion, and this heavily impacted the service speed. Our starters took a while to arrive, and the main dishes followed almost an hour after ordering. We were fine since we had starters, but other diners should be aware of this potential wait time when visiting on a Tuesday.
Despite the delay, the food was absolutely great. The portions are massive, providing fantastic value for money, even if the dishes are priced a little higher than average—they are absolutely worth it given the quantity and quality.
The only minor area for improvement was the wine selection; the offer felt quite limited, and we found that the staff lacked deep knowledge regarding the available wines.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere was friendly, and the quality of the cooking shines through. We will certainly be back, but on a Tuesday, we'll make sure to settle in and be ready for a...
Read moreBeen going here for years (back when it was Kyrenia) and it is still just the same, with amazing food (just go all out for the mezze but make sure you are really hungry before going because there is SO MUCH great food) and really friendly but unobtrusive service. Love it. :)
Update: Just ordered takeaway from here and they did us an incredible meze-to-go. This is definitely the way to get a meze as there was so much great food that we could take our time over it. Loving this place even more now and they were so helpful sorting out just what we wanted. I highly recommend this for great lockdown takeaway. The meze is definitely worth it (well, everything is but the meze is some of everything).
Another update: there are some amazing desserts available, from classic baklava to some fancy looking things that look almost as good as they taste and would be worthy of a top-end fancy restaurant. You won't regret giving this place a try (unless you hate...
