We came here at the end of February on a Friday because it looked genuinely lovely but things started going downhill pretty quick.
Firstly, the price is extortionate for the service and food that you actually get in here. We paid £20.50 per person which honestly didn’t seem too bad from the way the place looks as the decor is genuinely stunning. It looks fancy and welcoming.
Customer service is extremely lacking and it’s not even the fault of the front of house staff. When we came in it must’ve been around 2pm and it did get very busy very fast and there was only one front of house member of staff. When we arrived at the restaurant we didn’t even get a “Hi” or “Good Afternoon” it was just a “follow me”, that’s literally our entire conversation with the front of house staff member before asking for refill glasses. Like I said, I don’t blame the lack of customer service on the staff but rather the understaffing issue which was prevalent during our visit.
The place smells pretty bad - I’m not seeing this mentioned anywhere else in the reviews for Cosmo Silverburn but the place truly stank when we visited. The best way for me to describe it is old bathroom pipes or a very poorly kept public bathroom. The smell was strong where we were sat (very near to the front of restaurant bar and register) and it only got worse and stronger around the dessert and teppanyaki areas. It was quite uncomfortable and it made the food difficult to eat as all I could smell was that stench but there were no bathrooms in sight anywhere near us so we did find that quite strange.
Seating plans? Never heard of those. I feel like the staff choice of where to sit visitors is quite poor. I’m not sure what their policy or rules are around where to sit guests but we were expecting to have a lovely quiet lunch in this very beautifully decorated establishment until we were quite literally surrounded by couples and families with tons of kids which quickly made the experience go from enjoyable to dreadful. All the noise from the kids and seeing food being handled very poorly and dropped all around us was unpleasant and I feel like, judging by the sheer size of the place, they could have easily sat families with children in a different part of the restaurant. There were only two couples sitting in our area which was myself and my spouse and an elderly couple next to us who looked equally bemused by this poor seating choice.
The food was either brilliant or bland and you could never really tell which it would be. We have both tried a lot of different foods as we are quite adventurous with our tastes and we found that most of the meat dishes that were a variant of chicken or some part of a chicken were extremely dry, bland and the texture didn’t really meet our expectations. There were some exceptionally tasty dishes such as the bao buns, different curries and rices but when it came to noodles - they didn’t even really have a taste despite looking mesmerising. Desserts were alright, nothing really stood out and they all tasted a bit mediocre and maybe even a little bit cheap - especially the mousse.
Food was mostly lukewarm but that wasn’t the fault of the staff. I have seen a lot of reviews mention food temperature in this place and honestly I wholeheartedly agree that most of the things I ate were lukewarm at best but I have observed that most of the food pods are closed until some individuals take some food from them and leave them open instead of closing them. I have watched this happen numerous times during our visit and due to their apparent understaffing I really don’t see how the little staff they have would be able to constantly follow guests and close the pods after them non-stop. The pods don’t seem to close by themselves which I believe is a safety feature but guests should maybe be advised that this is a requirement.
Overall, it was an experience and a half but not a good one due to all the issues outlined in the review. I’d probably try Cosmo again but perhaps not...
Read moreHave visited 3 of these buffets this year and this one most certainly had the best quality and presentation of food. Its a gargantuan task getting 150 dishes perfect. As with all of these buffets its hit and miss but you have paid a hefty £21 per person which entitles you to take your time and sample everything before taking the plunge and committing yourself to gluttony.Instead of listing all availabilities i shall instead say they have everything except plain old mince and potatoes.Tonight, japanese teriyaki hotplate beef with noodles was very nice. You can make up a variety of meat ,fish and Vegetabe platters from a choice of world cuisines to your appetites content.I thought desserts, as in all these establishments look like sliced up supermarket box cakes. Not great. Staff were nice tonight and efficiently cleared away used plates. Great place to go after a visit to nearby Silverburn's Cinema. But be warned after a visit ,you will most likely need to go home and lie down.🤪
28/1/24, At the behest of a friend who likes the fish dishes here, i was persuaded against my better Judgement to return OH!! Dear, tonight was not a good return. Last time was ok. I will never understand what the factor lacking is in food that looks good on the plate but is so Tasteless. Tonight, honestly, i thought i had entered the most expensive works canteen. First major complaint is i seem to remember soft drinks being part of the package .Now they have to be bought at an extra £4. No thanks tonight i drank water. Now that thing about cameras and lies, these dishes look good in a photo but believe me they hide a multitude of culinary disasters. Nothing tasted like it would in a proper Chinese , indian or italian restaurant restaurant. Many items lying too long under hot lamps had become dried out. Perhaps because place was not nearly as busy as last time. Chicken, lamb & Chinese pork, rubbery texture and god knows how it can be so bland and tasteless. The rubbery tag could be used widely,as in "How was this place" OH! It was rubbery 🙄 deep fried starters Pancake rolls ,samosas were a chewy, flavourless nightmare. Everytime, looking like bulk frozen supermarket buys. At least 70% of what i put on my plate was left uneaten. Some things tasted like they were "Off" in the worst sense of the word, just like me, I'm off never to Return,46 quid down for a really bad night at the sloppy canteen. It was only 8pm and there were empty unreplenished trays all over the place.I thought i would try a little of most things and hopefully find something that tastes like it should. Dried out hot lamp Pizza you could use to sole your shoes. Leathery and chewy Yorkshire puds and carvery meatcuts also looking dried out under hot lamps. The dessert area looking really run down. Desserts again looking like cheap supermarket party food. Ok enough. Please don't see my review as being OTT or me having a bad night. Was the place having a bad night. Oh!!😱i sincerely hope so. Last review i said this was one of the better ones i had visited. What a bad turn in fortunes tonight in only a short time. I am banning myself and my fish loving friend from world buffet establishments.Las vegas is a helluva long way to go but its the only place, i've had quality buffet food. My friend was the lucky one in "the tasting like it should "quest. He ate a lot of cold and raw fish and said it was...
Read moreWish I could visit every day. We used to visit weekly, now it's more monthly visits. Don't get me wrong though, this isn't due to looking it less. It is due to my belly getting bigger. The food is amazing. The price is pretty good. Usually the seating is private-ish. The staff have only on one occasion failed to take our plates away within a minute of finishing with them and that happened to be when we went with some family. Very embarrassing as we had hyped it up somewhat but this was a one off as far as I'm concerned so I will let it slide. Other than this occasion the staff have always been great and very helpful and friendly. Could do with another drinks machine at the opposite end of the seating area as it's difficult to carry your plate and drink, then realise you need another fork. They vary some of the food up to. Most of the food is standard and there every time but you can sometimes get different dumplings, sushi, curry etc. Sometimes chorizo balls, sometimes curly fries, someone's banana cake. Dessert involves mainly fruit, sweets, chocolate fountain, mousse pots, cake selections, ice cream, jelly. Usual stuff really.
You pay on your way out, make sure to take note of your table number and hello yourself to a lolly, mint and toothpick. Ignore the receipt saying service not included. It is.
I live the hand sanitiser at the bottom of the stairs too. Very slimy and too much comes out but it soon does and makes me feel clean again.
Kudos. My favourite place to eat in Scotland.
Edit: was 5 stars, now 1 star. After reopening the choice of food is less, the vegetarian options are almost non existant and there are nuts in literally everything now. Will not be revisiting for the...
