We entered the restaurant about 5.45pm on a Saturday afternoon, we were shown our table and after a few minutes one of the waiting staff took our drinks order. 2 Diet Cokes £7.90, 1 Ginger and lime squash £2.60, 1 Beer £2.25, 2 Passionate mocktails £11.50. We also ordered our food, Cheese Nachos £7.99, Wall 2 Wall Chicken £29.95, Chicken Fr-jita £21.99, Chicken Fingers £19.99, Kids portion of chicken fingers £7.80, Half rack of glazed Ribs £21.99.
The nachos were cold and appeared to have a cheese liquid poured over them, however hunger allowed us to share and eat them. The wall to wall chicken contained small portion’s of chicken wings coated in a sauce, Sesame Chicken, Chicken Strips and Boneless Hot chicken bites. Described as a sharing plate for 4, I would definitely question this. It occurred to me that I could by these items at a local supermarket in packs of 3 for £10, but hey, maybe I was paying for the experience of eating at TGI’s. The platter was only warm, the chicken bits were dry and I had the impression they had been microwaved. But the table was hungry. We would then wait a further hour to see our main courses.
When my Ribs were eventually placed in front of me, the portion appeared to be larger than expected, i checked with the waitress who advised me this was a full rack, i advised that i ordered a half rack and she commented i would only be charged as a half rack. (This was a minor error and i was happy to overlook this) As i bit into the first rib, i noted that the ribs were only moderately warm. The texture was dry and there was a layer of something on the bottom of the ribs, Initially this appeared to be a layer of paper and i brought this to the attention of the waitress. The waitress apologised and removed the plate, she returned several minutes later to advise the manager would come to speak to me. When the manager arrived, i pointed out that we had waited over an hour for the food despite the restaurant being quite. I pointed out that the ribs were dried out and appeared to have been left under a heat lamp for several hours. I also pointed out that there was a paper-like substance on the bottom of the ribs. The manager appeared to see this as his chance to challenge my criticism. He puffed his chest out and stood tall stating, words to the effect, "It wasn't paper, that occurs when they take the ribs out of the microwave and place them down" I was beyond shocked and after a few seconds i composed myself enough to respond. I asked him to clarify that my ribs had been microwaved. He confirmed that they put them in the microwave to warm them up. I asked if this was company policy to heat food up in a microwave. He confirmed it was and this wasn’t his fault. I asked if he thought it was reasonable to pay £21.99 for microwaved food, he repeated this wasn’t his fault and that’s what the company directs. I pointed out that I could go to a local supermarket and buy all of the food on the table that had been served for a fraction of the price. I asked if the rest of the food was microwaved and after some anxiety and obvious uncertainty he said no. Given how dry the rest of the food was I suspect this to be untrue. I tried to reason with the manager and asked if he would be willing to pay for a meal in a restaurant knowing the food was microwaved, he didn’t answer. Can anyone answer me this. Is it reasonable to go to a TGI’s restaurant, pay £111 for a meal that has been cooked in a microwave. Is this a company policy? I was delighted when the manager offered to remove the cost of the ribs from my bill. Such a generous gesture. It still cost £83.98 for a very poor family meal. I came home hungry, my wife checked in the fridge for something she can cook for dinner. She found Ribs that we bought from a well known local supermarket last week, Guess what the ribs haven’t went anywhere near a microwave and they...
Read moreI've never visited this particular TGI’s before, but I have a particular soft spot for the brand.
TGI’s was the first American Diner I ever sampled in the UK, many moons ago.
This time I visited with my husband and son, who aren't fans, but they forfeited their usual choices as a wee treat for me.
I have to say - any restaurant that boasts a Harley Davidson at the door is good enough for me.
We ate reasonably late on a school night, so it was pretty quiet, with no wait time.
I am biased - but when it comes to the ambience - this place ticks all my boxes.
It's got that casual feel unique to American culture; no airs and graces, scruffy or dolled up to the nines, you get the same level of service.
It is spacious, with some seating entirely on the level or with a few stairs at most.
The tables are huge, comfortable and great for any number of diners. The table settings are simple, but everything feels immaculately clean.
The service is outstanding, with the staff bending over backwards to accommodate your needs.
The menu is traditional American diner, with something on there for everyone.
The service is fast, the staff are friendly and the food is quality.
On this particular visit my son and I shared a selection of starters as our meal. I heartily recommend checking out the onion rings and the macaroni cheese bites, followed by a Cream Soda float to wash it down!
The prices are pretty standard for this type of restaurant in Glasgow and for me, as an experience, it was...
