Five Guys restaurants in the UK are like deer or badgers; you very rarely see them, but when you come across them, it's amazing and special.
The closest Five Guys restaurant to where I live is 50 miles away, and as much as I love their food I don't feel like travelling that far for a burger and fries.
I was staying in the city of Dundee recently for work, and I wondered if there was a Five Guys there, as I vaguely recall there being two in Scotland, and I was in luck.
The prices of the food may make some people balk, but for what you get its worth every penny. The burgers are moist and cooked to perfection, and you pay one price and add all the toppings you want at no extra cost, so you don't have to tell them "no gerkins, no onions, etc." YOU decide what goes on YOUR burger.
The fries are something special too: thicker and chunkier than most other fast food chains, and theirs have a unique taste due to being fried in peanut oil. And the portion sizes you get are incredible, as you choose your size, they fill a cup of the size you want, put it in the bag, then add another scoop of fries on top.
If you're lucky and dining in is still an option, the soft drinks come with free refills, or you can try one of their God-tier milkshakes, where you can mix and match any of eleven options.
So if you're fortunate enough to have a Five Guys in your city, or you happen to be visiting a city with one in it, I cannot recommend...
Read moreThe place is bright, clean and tidy. There are glowing testimonies apparently made by previous customers written out on plaques on the walls. However, if you look closely these 'rave reviews' all refer to Five Guys Burger Joints in the USA, where they know how to actually put a quality burger together. This one, in the Overgate Shopping Centre, Dundee, doesn't!!
The girl who took my order was very pleasant and welcoming, but the service thereafter was dreadfully slow. I had a small burger with a few toppings, small fries and a bottle of Irn Bru. Nearly 13 quid. Very poor value for money. For instance, a slice of processed cheese on top of the burger puts the price up by £2. That's a fair outlay for, say, a family of 4.
When the burger finally arrived it was edible enough, but luke warm. Not good enough.
Furthermore, the staff were all laughing and joking with each other behind the counter instead of acting professionally and actually doing their jobs. I can only assume the manager wasn't present at the time although there was one guy there with a different coloured shirt from the rest of the staff. If he IS the manager, then he needs to start 'managing' and ensure that the standards rise.
All in all, I paid 'top dollar' here for a pretty poor customer experience. I hadn't tried Five Guys before and won't be back. This is a 'One-Star' review only because it isn't possible to...
Read moreDecided to treat myself since it was Christmas Eve, not a lot was open thought it would be a good idea to try Five Guys.
Going in and approaching the counter I was greeted by a nice lady who took my order. She was very polite.
I’m pretty simple, my order is just a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and fries. Along with a drink cup.
I was asked to take a seat and my order would be brought to me. I fill up my drink cup and take a seat.
The restaurant overall looked clean and well maintained. The table in my booth was a bit off balance but certainly not the end of the world.
I noticed there was a gentleman walking around maintaining the area and making sure customers were satisfied, I liked that. He was also very courteous.
My order was brought to me and I quite enjoyed it. Burger wasn’t dry but wasn’t soggy either. Fries were the skin on ones but they far exceed what you’ll get at KFC or anywhere else that I’ve tasted anyway.
Overall I would certainly eat at Five Guys again.
I’m sadly not wealthy enough to frequent the place. And it’s not somewhere to go if you’re looking for a bargain meal.
But if I’m ever looking to treat myself, Five Guys will be high in my...
