I went just for the whiskey tasting. I didn't eat so I couldn't rate the food, but the menu looked pretty good. However, the pub is very low-key and very local. No drunks or bams.
Straight away, I admitted to my guide, Chris, that I am a complete novice to the world of whiskey - even to the point that I don't even know if I like it. He took a second and then tailored his presentation (nearly 2 hours!) to my considerable ignorance. It was a presentation like few I've seen.
Chris gave me a virtual tour through six different distilleries from throughout Scotland, and through that covered an incredible range of subjects. From chemistry to history to changing tastes and whiskey snobbery and beyond.
He began his story by saying that there are no stupid questions. At that point I peppered him with a dozen stupid questions, and he answered them smoothly, taking his time to make sure I understood.
With the first drink in the flight of six, he explained where the whiskeys are made, and the differences imbued by each location. He went into many of the details of making whiskey, and showed with each sample how differences in the process result in different tastes. He talked about little-known tweaks in distilling, aging, and bottling that occur with every bottle. It was fascinating!
In fact, it was so interesting that a local gent in the next table admitted that he was listening to Chris instead of his wife because there were so many things he had never heard of!
I can't say that I savored every drop of the sampling - let's face it, whiskey is an acquired taste. But I DID notice many of the differences he described. Now I'm equipped to try different brews and learn to appreciate the subtleties better over time.
On the other hand, if you already enjoy whiskey, I'd bet you're going to like all the samples, and love at least one or two of them!
Highly recommended, for one person or a dozen. £40 per person, and I guarantee...
Read moreI made call after call to many different distilleries and pubs to no avail when attempting to book a last minute whiskey tasting as it was something I absolutely had to do while in Scotland. In my quest to find somewhere to do such, I called this place and Sally informed that they usually like to have the tastings booked a week in advance to arrange someone to go through everything with you and give a thorough explanation of each whiskey. This wasn’t quite the news I wanted to hear, so I pressed on trying to find another pub. In the end I went here with my girlfriend and met Sally in person. She explained what my options were to go about a whiskey tasting and my budget and everything. She thoroughly explained each whiskey and held great conversation with my girl and I for the duration of our visit. The pub is very classy, well kept, and clean. The crowd that it tends to attract is also very friendly. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip and I look forward to visiting again if I’m over back in Scotland. Until...
Read moreImpossible to figure out what's happening when you arrive if you're looking for food. When I got there tonight, there was a big mass of people around the bar (good for them) and all of the servers stuck behind the bar, but that meant that I stood there for quite some time just wondering if the kitchen was still running. When I pushed forward to meekly ask whether they were still serving pies (does one even order pies from the bar? Who knows!) I got snapped at for the temerity of asking instead of standing there waiting thirty minutes just to find out they didn't have food left. Maybe I just had bad luck with timing, but surely you guys can come up with a system that treats customers with respect instead of the rude attitude I got from the server handling sales at...
