This venue seems to enjoy embarrassing their customers: a ‘Dog friendly’ pub that we had booked for Sunday dinner. When we get there, the hostess isn't the warmest and when we gave our details she stated ‘the dog isn’t on the booking’ (I had my dog with me), I didn’t really know what to say as our other friend made the booking who wasn’t with us, but she would have put it down if there was an option. The hostess seemed to act as though this was just too much (there were other people behind us), then she ended up easily finding a table for us anyway.
I’ve since checked their booking system and at no point is there an option to choose that you have a dog with you/book people and dog. So that waitress was quite mean to put me in an embarrassing situation in front of a queue of people for something I had no control over.
That issue aside, this place is massively under-staffed. Despite our booking, it was 45min wait for food. And to get drinks at the bar we had to queue for 15mins. The barmaid kept making mistakes and it’s clear to see the staff in the kitchen were incredibly stressed too (open kitchen). They served beef dinner but ran out of horseradish even though it’s listed on the menu as an accompaniment. Water-like gravy and veg with next to no flavour. … On all levels it was just not good.
I hate to write negative reviews but if you’re looking at other options, choose those. Unless you enjoy being embarrassed in front of people, made to wait a long time for food and queueing for ages to get a drink, go elsewhere.
I won’t be back to this venue and would warn anyone about my experience. Once upon a time this was a nice place but since it got taken over by a faceless corporation it’s lost everything...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting The Pump House, a Marston’s pub, and I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable pub experiences I’ve had in quite some time. From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted warmly by Gib, who looked after our table throughout the evening. His professionalism, friendliness, and genuine enthusiasm really set the tone for a relaxed and welcoming visit.
The pub itself has a fantastic atmosphere—spacious, clean, and inviting, with just the right mix of traditional charm and modern touches. It’s clearly well looked after, and the staff take pride in maintaining a comfortable environment for guests. Whether you’re popping in for a casual drink or settling down for a meal, The Pump House manages to strike that perfect balance between being lively and laid-back.
The food was excellent, with hearty pub classics served hot, fresh, and full of flavour. The menu had plenty of choice, and everything we tried was generously portioned and good value for money. Drinks, too, were well kept—my pint was perfectly pulled, and the selection behind the bar had something for everyone.
What really elevated the evening, though, was the service from Gib. Attentive without being intrusive, he made sure we had everything we needed and added a personal touch with friendly conversation and genuine care. It’s rare these days to come across someone who clearly takes pride in their work and goes the extra mile to make guests feel welcome, but Gib absolutely did just that.
Overall, The Pump House is a fantastic pub, made even better by the outstanding service. I’ll certainly be returning soon and recommending it to...
Read moreAppalling!!! We arrived and were seated at our pre booked table at 2.45pm. All was fine, we were told to use the QR code to order direct to the table, great, not a problem. Except when we went to order the QR code function wasn’t working, it was disabled!
Ok no problem I’ll queue at the bar that’s ok. Having queued for over 20 minutes in a lengthy queue, with staff passing back forth, busy ok that’s understandable, I got half way down the queue only for a member of staff to open a till at the back of the queue to start taking orders, so everyone behind me ran to that ti, so myself and the people infront of me who had be queueing the longest got shunned and had to continue queueing longer.
I finally get to the till to complete my order to then be told “so sorry we don’t have much food left, we have no Sunday dinners, no grills, no burgers and no lasagne.” Ummmmm ok, so what do you have “fish and chips”.
Quite frankly I find that shocking for a busy central pub on the marina, during a lovely spring summer day, being incapable of having enough food to few BOOKED guests!
What was poor service even more was the fact that at lest 4-5 members of staff passed the lengthy queue on multiple occasions each! Not one single person stopped to inform anyone in the queue about the lack of food available. I had a very hungry 3 year old who’d excitedly picked his meal and was looking forward to this. I’d paid for parking just to visit the establishment. Then left promptly and had to drive elsewhere nd pay for further parking after finding somewhere else to sit down to eat and feed my young son.
Disgusting service! Will...
