Portofino — Restaurant in Wirral

Ate there last night. A couple of niggles and the high price mean we won't be going back in a hurry.

First off, we ordered a bottle of the sauvignon blanc, which happened to be the most expensive bottle of white at £30. The waitress brought it to the table with the foil already broken, not cut around the neck as you would expect but broken as would happen if someone just put the corkscrew in and pulled the cork out through the foil on top of the bottle. This was with the cork still in the bottle. Now I obviously don't have any proof of any wrongdoing and the wine was ok but it did look to me like it wasn't this bottle's first rodeo at Portofino.

Secondly, I ordered the Penne Punto Filetto which was described as "Penne pasta, strips of fillet steak pan-fried with mushrooms, shallots, wine and cream sauce". The pasta was nicely cooked, the sauce was lovely but I don't think the steak was fillet, it was well chewy, certainly not like any fillet steak I've had before. Again no proof but along with the wine bottle, I'll think twice before going...

Where do I begin, it was my son's 16th birthday celebration and it turned out to be the same night he had an awards ceremony for school, being held at The Floral Pavilion. We needed somewhere local to book a meal afterwards. A few days prior l, we was having new blinds fitted by Prestige Blinds and he overheard my conversation and recommended Portofino l, New Brighton. Well, aren't we ever so grateful he did... I rang to make a reservation and from start to finish they couldn't do more to help us make Ethan's birthday so very extra special. Earlier in the day of our booking, I dropped by with cake, balloons etc and the young gentleman who greeted me said, we shall make it extra special and they did just that.

On this visit on a Friday early evening, as always the restaurant is well presented, staff are very welcoming. The restaurant in the customer area is always very clean with a fantastic decor and layout. The staff and very professional, polite and friendly. The services is second to none, with food being served in good time. Glasses and cutlery as crystal clean. The food is well presented but unfortunately lacked in flavour, and was rather bland, low pan pizza lacked in flavour with the pineapple and ham having a different taste than expected, and cheesy garlic bread was greasey with no cheese flavour. Spaghetti carbornia was also lacking in flavour and the ham appeared to be the same used on the pizza. Mozzarella Fritti was also lacking in flavour and can be filling as a starter for some. Clearing of plates is very prompt giving you room on your table throughout the meal. Price against food is moderate to expensive depending on what you order and what your expectations maybe, but overall...
