I love that they make fresh real bread but the loaves are really too big. I understand they're trying to keep things the way it was in the past. But it doesn't make any sense to sell these gigantic Game of Throne things of bread unless you are feeding a whole army of people. I bought two things of bread different flavors and I thought maybe they were going to slice them up or something but they don't. You can buy a bread knife but you're stuck trying to figure out what to do with these huge medieval size rocks of bread. I tried to freeze it save it but it didn't work. I ended up having to throw them in the trash. I can only get off bits at a time and by then the bread was a fresh anymore. I didnt know how to keep bread that size fresh. it was too much for one person to have. I thought I was going to be able to cut and toast it but it's not like making regular sandwiches with this bread. I'm not sure how they make the sandwiches there fron these loaves. But I think I would prefer to just get the sandwiches on the different flavored bread from them because when I bought the cinnamon roll and the apple chip loaf to take home to try to do myself--it did not work. I wasted the money buying that bread-- I will not do that again. It's better to let them make the sandwiches and just get the to go orders I'm not sure who is buying the whole loaves when I was there I didn't see anyone else doing it now I understand why there's no way you can eat that if you thinking that you can get a loan for this bread cut it off slice it and have it as a snack make a sandwich dipping into oil before it goes bad, you can't unless you have Tyrannosaurus Rex hands and can rip apart the bread in one thrust and you have like a mouth the size of a wooly mammoth, it doesnt work. I really tried. I would like to know who's able to buy these loaves of bread and actually eat it the whole thing. The lines were really long probably because they have to cut those huge chunks of bread to make sandwiches from. There was almost no place to sit but I had come just...
Read moreI've been going to Great Harvest since shortly after they began. I absolutely love their bread it's full of flavor and yumminess. However the flavor of the shop has changed as has the ownership. I went in there at 10:00 a.m. to get a slice of bread and a cup of coffee. I asked for coffee with no foam and medium heat. I thought they had a dedicated barista or at least one that was doing coffee for the moment but after about 10 minutes, the girl that was at the machine left with her two cups of coffee for a customer and the other young lady started to make my coffee. I had somewhere to be and 10 minutes wait for a latte is ridiculous when there's very few people in the shop. The young lady made the coffee and steamed the milk poured it in the cup without skimming off the foam so I had an inch and a half of foam. I gave it back to her and asked her to remove the foam which she scooped out but left a cup shy of milk. I asked her to fill the milk up so she took the cold milk from the refrigerator and poured cold milk into my now cool coffee. Having owned a coffee shop in the past I was highly miffed and disappointed at the lack of knowledge and lack of customer service. Getting a bread sample was a bit of a challenge. If you weren't up at the register, you got ignored. I bought quite a few loaves of bread over the years and I guess I miss the old format and atmosphere of what it was like a year or two ago. If you want to have amazing bread this is still the place to buy it. For anything else...
Read moreVery expensive sandwiches. And bread. And pretty much everything else that they sell, even for Anchorage. I got the smoked salmon sandwich today and was almost, but not quite, thoroughly disappointed. There's so little salmon and So. Much. Filler! $14.00 is a lot for a sandwich by itself; no chips or drinks included here! I could justify it if I could have actually tasted the salmon! But the real kicker is that I also got a chicken salad sandwich for my coworker, and it ALSO was $14! Its chicken, for heaven's sake, not the golden goose, and chicken SALAD, at that! (Filler, filler, & more filler!) I hate to give bad reviews because I know that everyone is struggling these days, but this seems like over the cost of inflation, even for Anchorage. Go to Sophia's instead. They'll take care of you with bigger sandwiches for a lot less money, and you'll get a trip to one of the best salad bars in Alaska with your sandwich! However, Great Harvest's counter help is very nice and I do love their...
