This hotel is ok, probably a solid 3 star hotel but for the price I would give it a 2.5. Rooms have been recently redone and feature a nice desk if you’re hoping to do some office work. The rooms also have a small kitchenette. The gym that they advertise is tiny- one treadmill and one elliptical. All you really need on the road, we have had to wait to use it many times and in the wintertime, this really isn’t a walking neighborhood. The pool is also absolutely tiny- I guess it’s more for kids to play in than anything else. It smells so strongly of chlorine it’s a wonder anyone can tolerate it, but ok and behold it is packed with kids every evening, while parents crowd into the hot tub. We stayed here for 2 weeks. The hotel staff is generally really good, although the walls are extremely and certain groupings of the housekeepers do a LOT of constant yelling and talking, which made it a bit hard to work during the day. Additionally when we have had guests in the next room over you can hear every bit of conversation. We had a family with a kid who threw a lot of screaming tantrums and now, a woman who is on the phone constantly, first thing isn’t he morning and into the night. It doesn’t give much of a feeling of privacy. Additionally our room was on the end of the building, where people stood right outside the door (and under our window) to smoke cigarettes. This comes in through the vents and stunk up our room. The stairwell always reeks like cigarettes and sometimes the hall reeks too. The free breakfast is pretty much what you would expect of a free hotel breakfast- they rotate the choice of fruit every day, and have waffles on the weekend- however the breakfast area is absolutely PACKED on the weekend. There is a grocery store called Natural Pantry across the street, which is a decent natural foods store and a movie theatre next to the hotel. They were out of laundry detergent for the entire 2 weeks we were there so if you are hoping to do laundry I would suggest you bring...
Read moreI checked into the SpringHill Suites Midtown on Dec. 15, 2018. I came to Anchorage to pick up my Grandson from OCS. I spent the day shopping for boots, clothes, and toys for him, because he didn't have very much. We got back to the hotel late that night. I couldn't carry all the suitcases and things into the hotel by myself with a small child, so I left his new boots, and some of the clothes and toys that he wouldn't need in the trunk. I parked near the front door, my car was in plain view of the front door. I was also parked in the light and right in front of the security camera. The next morning I found that the back driver's side window of my car was smashed in and my car was trashed and broken into. They took things out of my console and glove compartment, and the new boots and clothes that had tags on them out of the trunk. I know that SpringHill isn't liable, but come on SpringHill! What kind of security procedures do you have in place?! What are your night staff doing? Apparently not monitoring the security cameras! To top this off, I wasn't offered any help or assistance in this circumstance by the hotel staff! Here I am a woman alone with a small child trying to deal with this alone! The hotel desk clerk said that she was going to tell the manager, but returned alone and didn't say much after that. I never saw a manager at all! Mine wasn't the only car that had their window broken in to either! I had to clean out my car and take it somewhere and get a rental car. I stayed there a second night, because I used my points to pay for my room in advance, but I will not stay there again! This area does not seem safe! When I checked out, I was asked, "How was my stay?" Not good at all! This stay cost me car repairs, rental car expenses, and...
Read moreI typically stay at the SpringHill Suites at University Lake, but they were charging 15$ more for the night I needed, and I figured it'd be a similar experience at their midtown location. And, to be fair, for a one night bed and shower and that's it, it was a good fit, but I would not want to stay here multiple nights.
The sheets were old - one had what looked like mold - and did not look like the stock photos on the website. The room was much smaller, as was the bathroom (toilet and shower are not separated like they are at University Lake. Upon check in, and perhaps because it was an online check in, I barely got a greeting, was given my key card and basically left on my own to find my room. The lobby is much smaller (actually what lobby?! it's the same place as the food court area).
I don't ever use the pool when I travel, but it, too, looked smaller than the University lake location. They had a school group there that night and the community spaces were all so small that it felt like there were hundreds of students when really there were just a few dozen.
The internet connection when they are at 90% full (which is what the lady at the front desk told someone they were on the phone) is non-existent. I could not get on and had to use my phone's wifi.
The rooms tables had stains on them that couldn't be washed off, the sinks all drained painfully slow, but filled up very quickly. The fridge kept things marginally cold (it was a bottle of water). Microwave though was clean. TV was nice and worked well.
Overall I'd not try to save the $$ next time and just stick with what I know works well. University Lake is worth...
