I’ve lived in Anchorage for years and must’ve driven past Sushi Ya dozens of times without even realizing it was there. But now that I’ve found it, I’m so glad I did! My goal is to try all the sushi restaurants in Anchorage, and so far, this one is at the top of my list.
The atmosphere here is perfect—calm, relaxing, and ideal for a date night, a romantic getaway, or just a quiet dinner where you can actually have a conversation. One of the first things I noticed (and appreciated) was how the menu is divided between hot rolls and cold rolls. A lot of sushi places make you figure that out on your own, so this little touch made ordering so much easier.
Now, let’s talk about the sushi itself—incredible. I love exotic rolls, and the ones I picked out delivered that perfect sushi experience—that feeling when you take the first bite and it’s like a flavor explosion in your mouth. I honestly want to try every single roll on the menu at this point.
The staff was also fantastic—super helpful in guiding me through the menu since it was my first time here. I always love pairing sushi with hot sake, and while they did have it, it was just a standard option. I would’ve loved to see more varieties because hot sake with cold sushi is one of the best combinations ever. Also, if your waiting for your date, there is not a place for you to wait inside. See you might as well wait in your car. They want to see you right away.
One of the most unique and exciting things about Sushi Ya? The private dining setup. This is the first restaurant I’ve ever been to where you can pull down a blind and have complete privacy between you and your date. That was such a fun and intimate touch—it made the experience even more special.
The prices were fair and what you’d expect for good sushi.
Final Verdict: If you’re looking for an amazing sushi spot in Anchorage, whether for a romantic night out or just a relaxing dinner, Sushi Ya is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back—and working my way through the...
Read moreThe Service was on point! Our Waitress, Kayla was superb! She was very tentative, kept our beverages full, checked in often, but didn't hover or let us feel forgotten. My sibling ordered the White Peach Cocktail (from scratch) that was 100% delicious! The food...oh my! We ordered the a few rolls, NONE of which were a disappointment! We recommend the Trash Can Roll for sure...as well as the Alaska Roll, the Philadelphia Roll, the Dragon Roll, California Roll and lastly the Crunch Roll (I think...it's the non-spicy Shrimp Tempura roll). We started with the Calamari...ON POINT! The Shrimp and Veggies Tempura and then a Noodle bowl (Chicken), it had a different name, but I can't really remember it; these two dishes were also delicious, but the rolls out shine the rest of the meal (in my personal opinion). The atmosphere was quant and peaceful (honestly, our giggling was probably the loudest in the whole restaurant, last few hours with siblings before they flew home). The Staff as a whole were just great. Everyone was smiling, our table was always checked on and we never felt crowded with spent dishes. Absolutely recommend for any occasion, even just a solo afternoon pick-me-up, date with the Spouse or even the kiddos (kids menu has a few selections). OH! LASTLY, if you like "Sushi", but don't want to full Sushimi experience, they have a little 'Red Fish' next to all of their dished that have raw seafood in it so it makes your choices easier! The whole establishment was super clean and very tidy! The bathrooms were immaculate! 10 out of 10! Absolutely will be returning.
We went for early dinner (4pm), was sat distanced, booth dividers in place, mask not required. Wait time for food (apps) 15 minutes after ordering (food came out perfectly cooked and HOT!). Drinks were almost immediate (except for the adult beverage, a couple extra minutes to prepare). Main course was about 20/30 minutes or so...
Read moreWorst experience I’ve had at a restaurant in a long time. Mine you, my great grandma and I would go to sushi ya weekly when it was on dimond, but was my first visit to their new location, and my last.
waited close to 30 minutes for drinks, another 10-15 before we could order appetizers and before we could order our meals with it the waiter walked off and was nowhere to be seen.
We waited for our appetizers and finally ordered our meals. 25 minutes after ordering a woman comes out and tells us “the new waiter forgot to inform you the salmon teriyaki takes a long time”, likely making an excuse because he probably didn’t put the order in.
She then says “I’ll just bring her something different”, like she knows what the other person would like to eat.
At that point, with my one year old getting fussy after sitting for so long, I told her “we will just pay for what we have received and eaten, I don’t want to sit here any longer waiting for food”.
I pulled out my credit card and held it up so that we could pay for our meal, and she literally SNATCHES the card out of my hand and I just about lost my cool.
After a terrible experience to the point where everyone in our table of 4 wants to leave, the least they could do is be courteous or be forward about the fact that they’ve bitten off more than they can chew with the amount of customers/busyness at the new location.
I won’t be back. The old sushi ya was personable, fun and a good place to enjoy a great meal with good portions and a friendly and helpful staff. I don’t have a positive note for the...
