Unfortunately, my experience at Don Sushi was extremely negative. First of all, this is far from authentic Japanese cuisine — it’s more like poorly executed Mexican-style sushi. They don’t even know how to properly cook sushi rice. It kept falling apart, making it impossible to eat the sushi properly. Sushi rice should be sticky and hold its shape, but theirs was completely loose, and every time I tried to pick up a piece or dip it in soy sauce, it just fell apart.
Secondly, the chef or whoever he was left me with a terrible impression. I tried to ask if they had certain types of sushi I wanted to try, but he didn’t understand me at all and seemed completely uninterested in helping. I even showed him a picture to explain what I was asking for, but he didn’t bother to care or try to help. His attitude was dismissive, and it was clear from his expression that he just didn’t want to engage.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is also unpleasant. The place feels more like a massive basement, which makes the whole dining experience uncomfortable.
The waitress was also kinda unprofessional. I couldn’t understand why she kept saying “excuse me” over and over, probably about 30 times during my visit. Every time she brought something to the table, she would say it again, creating an awkward and uncomfortable vibe.
On top of that, I decided to give this place a second chance and went back with my friend. From the moment we walked in, we were met with incredibly loud, blasting music and live musicians. We sat down and were given menus, but within just a few minutes, we realized we couldn’t tolerate the overwhelming noise in such a large, echoing space. We ended up leaving without ordering.
In short, I would not recommend going to Don Sushi. It’s far from a real Japanese dining experience. If you’re looking for authentic and delicious sushi in Albuquerque, this is definitely not the place. In fact, it’s probably one of the worst sushi restaurants I’ve...
Read moreLast night, I ordered from Don Sushi via GrubHub as it is newly offered. As far as GrubHub goes, there was nothing wrong with the actual delivery process—that was great, however; there is a lot to be desired with Don Sushi. We ordered a Regular Ramen (Tonkatsu Ramen), visually it looked fine, nothing special, but not bad. Upon first taste, it was horrible, the water was like tepid bath water, and there was absolutely no flavor to this “ramen” broth. Completely bland as if someone poured water over plain noodles. This is not ramen. A Maruchan instant packet would have been an upgrade, at least the packet comes with a flavor. The noodles were also soggy and simultaneously mealy. We called and Don Sushi refunded us through GrubHub. Ok, that was fine enough. Then we ordered two rolls and Tako (octopus) nigiri, it seemed at least edible at the time, if not palatable. You can definitely get better sushi at Whole Foods. The nigiri was rubbery and foamy at the same time, the rest of the Sushi, which was primarily salmon based was, again, seemingly edible, but not the best. This morning both of us that ate are sick with food poisoning. I had high hopes for Don Sushi as it is newly offered on GrubHub and had good reviews, but my hopes were very quickly dashed. There is a huge lack of quality Sushi/Japanese food in Albuquerque, but coming from Los Angeles I was willing and happy to give Don Sushi a chance. Both Don Sushi and my stomach struck out. I hope the quality improves for the sake of the restaurant, but I won’t be dining...
Read moreDo not order or eat here!!! For a place with such great reviews, we are shocked with the quality of food….. as Asian Americans, we’ve had our fair share of Sushi roll/Japanese places along the way. In terms of rolls, this has to be one of the worst places we’ve ever had.
Rice is too mushy, to where it has lost its original shape; its literally almost rice a rice cake. Rice in sushi should not be mushed into one form, but this place somehow manages to do that. We weren’t sure whether we were having rice or rice cake?? (Please train your chefs to control your rice. They should not be rolled with too much force- which causes rice’s gluten to form stickiness, hence the mushy rice cake instead of actual sushi roll.
They are very cheap with their ingredients Let me put it this way 30% ingredients + 70% rice = paying $13+ for a sushi roll at this place
What a shame. For a place with high ratings, this was very disappointing. (And we are...
