Well, here I am, at Whataburger. I had read some of the reviews shortly before going in -- they were pretty varied, some good, some bad, a lot of them talked about waiting 20+ minutes for food.. I ordered a "hot apple pie" for about a dollar. I sat at the table with my friend, who was given his chocolate shake before he even left the front counter. "Wow", he said, wide-eyed, "it's so chocolatey". I asked for a sip, and indeed, we agreed it was like getting slapped in the face by chocolate. Not necessarily in a bad way. So we sat there, on our phones. I didn't really care about the apple pie that much, but eventually, I went up to ask about it. "Oh, you didn't get it?" the man said, and walked behind the corner and produced it: a small, folded box on a tray. As I grabbed it from him, and thanked him with a bit of a disappointed tone, he looked as though he was considering saying I could have it for free, or something, but no such generosity occured. It wasn't very busy in there, but it wasn't a big deal. I sat back at my table, where my friend jokingly picked up the box and the dark, crispy pie slipped unimpressively out onto the tray. I looked at my receipt: it had been 25 minutes, but in reality, it had just been forgotten for what might have been eternity. So, we ate it, and sat on our phones some more. We joked about getting more food, and we each ended up getting a Whataburger, his with cheese, and we shared a large fry. Mine came to about $8 with a cheeseless burger and large fry. To get to the point, the burger was a bit dry, it tasted like something you make at home when you aren't really very good at cooking, but you still did a good job. I think it could have used mayonnaise. The fries were on the thin side, and we both agreed they hadn't been salted at all. The "large" size wasn't particularly generous -- the "small" must be pretty pathetic. Still, they weren't bad, and they were good with the spicy ketchup. Overall I wasn't really impressed, especially with the medium price point. The service seemed good. I probably wouldn't get a burger if...
Read morethe most important thing i have to say about this place it that the food was, hats off, the best fast food u have had in a while. i ordered the green chili double cheese and tomy surprise it was a hefty burger with what seemed to be two different kind of cheeses which were both creamy and rich with flavor when i took a bite. i know back when i worked at mcdonalds we also had green chili doubles but nowhere near have as good and flavorful as this burger, not to mention that the buns from mcdonalds come out soaked as a result of the sop of green chili slapped on there, its clear to me whataburger made that much more of an effort to make burger with the perfect amount of cheese, green chili, and most of all no soggy nasty bun. the onion rings were perfect and every meal was packed individually. as expected there were some slight problems but i like to give these places a chance to fix it ans that is exactly what they did when i made them aware of the odd tasting soda. they were fast, polite, and very understanding which is high on the importance...
Read moreTheir burger selection is great. My wife loves patty melts, with their sauteed onions, and swiss cheese and Whataburger's is very good, though it comes on Texas toast, not rye bread.
They get that a burger joint in New Mexico can't not have green chili, which Five Guys doesn't.
The fries are more than serviceable.
They have a drive through, though the one near me is so often backed up that I prefer to call in my order and pick it up ten minutes later.*
I take my order back to my home and have a glass of wine or beer, so I really don't know or care about their fountain drinks.
So I keep going back to Whataburger because they are near my home and provide phone order* and take out service and they have great Green Chile Cheeseburgers.
*They no longer take orders by phone, though. For some people their web site will be fine. But it doesn't allow you to ask for no salt on your burger or fries, so if you need that, you'll have to walk in and order at the counter or wait in line for the...
