I'm a pie guy. Sure, cake is nice, but that typical sponge is a dime-a-dozen. I think the real challenge comes when trying to balance finicky pastry dough with its endless tender/flaky challenge against the dampness of filling and have the whole thing last at least a few days—because the other reason pie is better than cake is that you can have it for breakfast with far less guilt. Buttermilk Sky hit the mark quite well each and every time! Their original Southern Custard comes across just sweet enough, just creamy enough, without feeling cloying or heavy. The Chocolate Cream is decadent enough to make a succubus blush. The Key Lime's tartness makes your mouth pucker in just the right way. And while you might want to go face-first into the Coconut Cream, it's also just fine by the slice. I can't go five stars, though, because I do have to fault the crust; the Oreo, graham cracker, and shortbread crusts are fine, but the true challenge of pie—that finicky pastry-like pie crust—is still a bit off. Tender, yes; flakey, no; and flavorful, not really. It's kind of pale and lacking. I think I'll stick to making pie crust at home.
Sadly, Buttermilk Sky has just closed up shop at this location in Allen (as of late April 2020). But that doesn't mean the doors are locked. In fact, it looks like a new name is already in the works, "Batch Bakery", with the promise of better implementations of the current pie line-up and newer pies to boot. I look forward to trying out these creations and reviewing them under their...
Read moreUpdate January 2025: cupcakes are good! skip the chocolate pie, they stopped doing it with chocolate crust because of feedback? It's not worth the calories anymore. Pb pie doesn't have chocolate crust anymore either. Sweet rolls are good but might still vary a little bit. I'm not sure if they still do biscuits but if they do, Get the jalapeno cheddar biscuits if you can. Those are yummy. Their brownies are very good. I recommend the "full size" single brownie and cut that up or the pan o' brownies they started selling. The bite size bags dry out pretty fast, so only buy if you're sharing them with a bunch of people.
Everyone has been nice and polite any time we're there. They always have a good selection available. There's a few things they offer that I think are too sweet (cinnamon buns, lemon bars) and I wish they are oatmeal raisin cookies. The atmosphere is fine? It's clean, not cluttered. There's no place to eat inside. It's just stop and buy. Chocolate chip cookies are pretty good too. But gotta be in the mood for those since they have white chocolate too.
They have regular seasonal pies or cheesecakes and we've enjoyed quite a few of those. November/December they have a bourbon pecan pie that's amazing. I think they have a decent variety of flavors too. Basically, sometimes I wish we lived...
Read moreA friend and I stopped in for some pie yesterday after lunch. I’ll be honest.. I’d tried this bakery a few years ago when it went under another name, and I had never been impressed. Yesterday was a different story though. Wow! The lady we spoke with was very welcoming, and told us about all of their products since we told her we’d never been there before. We bought some different mini pies, and tried some samples before leaving. I grabbed what I thought was a key lime pie sample, and was completely thrown off in the best way because it was actually a coconut cream pie sample. I love coconut, and it seriously was the best tasting coconut cream pie I’d had in my life. I wasn’t planning on trying a different sample since we’d just had lunch, but after that delicious coconut one, I just had to. It was another delicious pie with chocolate crust. Chocolate cream I think. It was amazing. The pies we brought home were delicious as well! I’d be in trouble if I worked there because I’d be eating pie all the time. If you’re looking for some yummy pie, and other baked goodies, you have to check...
