This review is long overdue, so forgive my lengthyness! My first experience with this establishmentš¹š¹ and Miss Carolš was Spiritual and Divinely Ordainedš«. (Nothing "spooky" just phenomenal! It was last summer, an evening with a couple hours to kill, a starving belly, and 1 thought: (I want some "home-cooked" food). Happy Sandwich was an unexpected treat, like an oasis in the dessert. This is why I say this was long overdue... First of all, don't let the name mislead you. Although this is most definitely a HAPPY place, its certainly not only about sandwiches any more. It may be one reason we may all have been missing out on the BEST-EST Caribbean, down-home, "back to deh islands mon" experiences here in Allentown & the Lehigh Valley. That and the fact that we pro'lly just be flying past going to where ever, thru the lower side of 7th Street (past the Statue & Walnut St) in Allentown, PA. She's located on the left hand side by the vaccuum store. What caught my attention were the signs: Open, Roti & Hallal Goat! Anywho, Miss Carol is the essence of a true Caribbean Queen, and her food (Trinida- dian) is all that & more! She had my head spinning with the selections & sides. We settled on a delicious𤤠combo with some Roti & Curry Goat, Rice n Peas, Macaroni Pie, Plantains & Falafel Balls. (I was hungry & wanted to try a lil of er'ything!š) So although its order at the counter, there's booth seating available. I was treated to her Maubi (a taste) & her "Special Drink", and felt properly spoiled as though Granny, Aunty & all the Ancestors were embracing me and feeding my soul.šš¾āāļø Fast Forward to last week when I introduced my Panamanianšµš¦ friend to the experience that is Miss Carol.šš¾āāļø Confirmation is the best form of flattery! David started conjuring memories of his summers in Panama, full of escapades and his food adventures as we enjoyed the experience! We leisurely shared and swapped stories of home (š»š® foh me) over our island feast. His was the Chicken Roti, mine the Stewed Oxtail, Rice & Peas with Plantains (maduros), then the soft drinks to top off the flavors. Prepare to be lulled by the music (we be Jammin' meh son), the atmosphere, the decor and the enchanting Miss Carol and her gifted hands and tastes of home! Don't believe me? I understand because "yo had to be dere"! But I do have some pics n vids as evidence, because I also believe "the proof is in the pudding". Regardless, you go taste and see for yourself, but go early before the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMs. Carol runs Happy Sandwich Caribbean Cuisine and I must say I am BEYOND thankful that we stopped in Allentown on our way home to Virginia. We called about an hour ahead of time to ask Ms. Carol if she would be able to accommodate our plant-based lifestyle. She agreed and made some chana and potatoes to go into our roti. We arrived an hour later and we were met with a test tasting of greens, curried cabbage, mauby, and pineapple juice, Ms. Carol is spot on with the flavor! EVERYONE in our large family happily ate and we were able to bring food home for my mother who is from Tobago and let me tell you, she was so happy for her roti! My 1 year old would barely chew his food before he was begging for more. He ate the greens, he ate the cabbage, and he went crazy over the roti. My only issue with Ms. Carol is that she does not have a place open near me. I am pretty sure my entire paycheck would belong to her. If you live in the Allentown area or if you are just passing through, I implore you to head down to Happy Sandwich Caribbean Cuisine. Thank you so much for taking such good care of us Ms. Carol! May God's blessings be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWouldāve given this 0/5 stars if I couldāve. Iām sure the food is good but I didnāt even get that far. I called to see if delivery was an option since Google said it was. The lady answered the phone and said delivery isnāt an option. I proceeded to start an order to get some food for my friends party, which wouldāve been a ton of food, and this lady proceeded to cut me off as I ordered. She told me, āIām not going to take an order over the phone because the last time I did they didnāt come pick up the food.ā I was reasonable and said āOk can I order it online and then come pick it up?ā She followed up with āNo Iām not going take an online order either. If you want food, youāll have to come to the store, order the food, Iāll make it for you, and you can have your food ok?ā Lastly I said ok.
Super rude. We were going to spend a minimum of $70+ on food and now we wonāt. Weāll order from a different Caribbean restaurant. Iām sure the food is amazing but that impression killed any chance of paying for this any time soon. Maybe when they value service Iāll...
