We made a last minute reservation at Flemings for my parents’ anniversary dinner on a Thursday night, which wasn’t really necessary because there was plenty of availability. We were pleasantly surprised to see the staff had set the table with little hearts and a card for my parents’ special occasion. We appreciated lovely atmosphere created by the small extra touch.
For the most part, service was great. Our server, Eric, took great care of us throughout the night. Nothing wrong with him - he was perfect. However, I could have done without the racial micro aggressive comments made by a man I assume was the manager (he wore a black suit and had a man bun).
We were enjoying our dinner when he came over and asked us if we were Filipino. We weren’t. Then he starts going off about how his wife is Filipino and colonization. I want to call attention to this kind of behavior and denormalize it. I hate when people come up to me and start trying to guess my ethnicity like I’m some kind of sideshow attraction. Guessing a person’s ethnicity unprompted may seem like a harmless icebreaker, but is actually a racist micro aggression that singles out minorities for appearing different and makes them feel like they don’t belong in a community.
And on top of that, it’s rude. What am I, a cocker spaniel? It should not be (and isn’t) socially acceptable to come up to Asian people, try to guess “what kind of Asian they are,” bring up your Filipino wife just because we’re Asian (we weren’t even Filipino), and go on a tangent about colonization.
… Anyways, my father and I opted for the wine flights. He had the $18 Paso Robles flight, and I had the $15 House of Brown flight. For that price, we each had 3 2 oz pours of various wines. As someone who doesn’t drink wine often, I liked getting to try different wines. I particularly enjoyed my father’s Sauvignon Blanc. I actually liked all of my dad’s wines better. My mother got the Blueberry Lemon Drop, which I also enjoyed.
To start, we shared the large seafood tower, which is $189 and is good for 3-4 people. The seafood was fresh and delicious. Each bite of the lobster tails and Alaskan king crab legs was plump and juicy. I’m not an oyster person, but I presume they were good because my father and sister cleaned them all up. They said that the mignonette was especially good.
The sides were also very good. We got the Sweet Corn Brûlée and the Chipotle Mac and Cheese. The crab cakes were decent, but I feel like I’ve had better.
I had the Filet Mignon with Crab-Stuffed Lobster as my entree. To be honest, I thought the filet mignon was just ok - a bit tough if anything. The crab-stuffed lobster was delicious, but a bit too small. I expected better for an $89 entree.
And for dessert, we had the Cheesecake and the Molten Lava Cake. I was not a fan of the cheesecake - the texture was too waxy for me. The molten lava cake was decent. Dark chocolate forward. And at the end, the staff gifted us some complimentary dark truffle for my parents’ anniversary.
Overall, I had a good dinner at Flemings. Would I come back? …mmm… meh? Maybe if I needed another last minute relatively fancy dinner...
Read moreI had a tough Friday night solo dinner here. It had been a tough draining week and day, so I felt like pampering myself by eating out.
The entrance is not clearly marked. It is a far walk from the valet area to the front door (painful for someone with knee issues).
I just wanted to have some light bites and taste different dishes, get myself reacclimated to Flemings (it had been pre-Covid since I had visited their Newport Beach location).
The duo hostess team was very warm, friendly and welcoming.
The meal started off with a warm loaf with two kinds of butter. Sweet cream (perfection) A cabernet caramelized red onion that was sublime I may have overdone it on the bread and butter
The shrimp cocktail was good in terms of taste. But the presentation lacked any wow factor. The 4 tiger prawns were displayed so tightly together on a bed of ice - not visually pleasing.
Then went on to the salad. Got the mixed green salad. Looked nice and the Campari tomatoes were very fresh. But the mixed greens were not. More than a few pieces were really rotten. Not fresh lettuce. So I sent it back. They remade the salad. It was disheartening b/c then found another piece of rotten lettuce. I am sure they didn't like me sending back salads...
On the 3rd try they suggested I try a different salad Went for the strawberry arugula, it was better, strawberries were fresh But the oil vinaigrette wasn't tasty The salad was overly salty but didn't want to say They comped me the salad and did not charge for the other two
Then I was told that the sides could be ordered for a portion of one at half the price (Ah-mazing). the mac n cheese was divine, so cheesy, creamy and crispy with that crust the green beans with chili oil or paste was so delish, I finished the whole thing and poured the excess chili oil onto the mac n cheese
I was curious to try their mushroom side. It was buttery, had softened garlic cloves, herbs, etc. So delish. This hit it out of the park. Glad I ordered a full portion. Its a medley of different kinds of mushrooms. Alot of mini porcini mushrooms that were so charming and delish.
Service was pretty ok. I only had to wait 2x to get my server to my table. The other support servers for water and other dishes were solid.
The manager did come over to address me personally about the double salad mishaps. 3rd time was the charm I guess.
I would come back for ONLY the bread/butter...
Read moreThe wife and I came here for our 20th wedding anniversary. We usually go to SD Gaslamp District and eat at the Flemings there. With everything going on, we decided to just stay local and go to the one in Anaheim. First of all, there is No parking... You either have to go all the way to the back parking structure for self park and walk a good distance to get to the restaurant or you can do valet for the Hotel. We were in my 1955 Chevy wagon and decided to do valet ad not leave the car unattended in the parking structure. Now my car is not a show car, but its getting there and it drives fine. The valet didn't want to let me park the car up front where there were about 15 to 20 cars already parked in a round about and there were open spots. I had to talk to another guy and he let me park my car in an open spot in the front of the hotel after an argument went on for about 5 minutes of the first valet not wanting to help me. We finally got into the restaurant and just made our reservation, (we would have been early if I didn't have to argue with the valet) and they sat us in the bar area. Table was nicely decorated, had an anniversary card and it looked very nice. Then the problem started with our waitress also being the bartender. She was too busy serving the people at the bar and chatting it up with them that she would forget about us at the tables in her area. We ordered appetizers and she said she'd be back to take our dinner order. She never came back, we had to let her know that our appetizers were done and we were ready to order our meal. I've never had that done before, it was weird. So we finally ordered our meals and everything was delicious. We were already talking about our dessert, we always get the creme brulee, but our waitress never came to see how our food was or anything. Again, we had ti go tell her we were done and ready for our check. Then she had the nerve to bring the check and ask if we were ready fir dessert. I told her we were ready, but she never came by so we're over it. I just think for the prices they charge, we should've had a better experience for our 20th wedding anniversary. Wife wanted to go back for her birthday, but with that experience, we might go...
