Juan Pollo for you, dos pollo for me.
Formerly located on the corner of Beach & Ball, Juan Pollo occupies the former home of Busy Bee restaurant. I've passed by the old location a multitude of times, never thinking to stop by for some chicken. After seeing Juan Pollo featured on a recent "Eye on LA" episode, my interest was piqued and I schlepped over after my weekly visit at Forest Lawn.
Specials abound!
Tues/Wed Special - 2 chickens w/ tortillas & salsa/ $15.99 Lunch Special - 2 piece chicken (white or dark) w/ tortillas, salsa, rice & beans/ $4.99 Dinner Special - 1/2 chicken w/ tortillas, salsa, rice, beans, potato salad & medium drink/ $7.99 BOGO tacos
For dinner, we went with the lunch special (2 piece white meat), plus a small potato salad- "Eye on LA" mentioned how Juan Pollo's potato salad is made fresh with real potatoes, which people rave about. I did, indeed, taste the freshness. The salad was creamy & light. I found it lacking brightness. Some relish would've really helped elevate the potato salad
The breast & wing were large with delectable skin. The meat was moist on the outside, but sorta dry on the inside. The pico de gallo salsa (choice of mild or spicy) helped correct the lack of moisture. Plus, the salsa comes already packed in plastic cups. No salsa bar here. The chicken wasn't bad, but was on par with rotisserie chicken the likes that you get at Costco.
The rice was good, though! Fried rice, with bits of chicken, really hit the spot. The beans were filling and had the right consistency of not too mushy and not too hard.
Service was good. The cashier was friendly & cheerful, and quickly gave us more salsa when requested, Plenty of seating via tables. With no A/C, fans helped alleviate the heat, but not by much.
Parking is in a small private lot and by way of street. The area is a bit dodgy, with derelicts in around the back alley way & surrounding area. I wouldn't stay longer than I had to, if you catch my drift.
Scratch another one off the list. Juan Pollo offers up a lot of food for not much dough. No way replacing El Pollo Loco when it comes to the flavor department, Juan Pollo is a more inexpensive option when you're in the mood for chicken. Filling & cheap, I wouldn't go out of my way for Juan Pollo, but if I was in the area, it's definitely an option when the hunger pangs...

ย ย ย Read moreThe fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and salsa on top of warmed tortillas filled with chicken paired with their beans and rice always kept me coming back without hesitation. However, this trip was disappointing. I understand covid held up a lot potential income but microwaving the tacos with the lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes already on them is not a good area to cut costs. How I know they were microwaved is because I used to microwave my leftovers and the tomato was warm and soggy, lettuce was warm and wilted, and the shredded cheese was drinkable immediately upon sitting in the car. I only gave it 3 stars because I know how amazing the food is there and I hope they...
