This review was a long time coming...
TLDR: I lived next to Mimi's for two and a half years and went once a week. Best ice cream place I've been to in the DMV, fun creative flavors, boozy flavors, seasonal menu changes, friendly staff. Absolutely would recommend checking it out. My personal favorite flavors are Bastani sonati, choco heaven, black sesame, ube, eggnog, cookie monster, and sweet corn.
The first time I went to Mimi's I had the ube. I was very pleased that it wasn't overly sweet and had nice chunks of roasted ube in it. I enjoyed the ube so much that a few weeks later, when I was thinking of what to do for my cheat day, I decided to go to Mimi's again. And again for my next cheat day. And then every week for my cheat day. Since Mimi's rotates flavors seasonally, there were more than enough flavors for me to get a new one each week. So that's what I did; I started a list and kept track of each flavor I had tried, with my goal being to try every flavor.
Over the two years I lived in Pentagon City, I tried 85 different flavors, and I can comfortably say there wasn't a bad flavor among them. My preference being floral, summery flavors, I predictably enjoyed earl grey, fennel, butterfly pea, and hojicha, but I also discovered I enjoyed some heavier flavors (choco heaven, cookie monster, eggnog) and vegan ones as well (vegan ube made with coconut milk was perfection). Mimi's also has signature flavors such as Szechuan spice, wasabi pea, toasted banana nut, rum raisan, and Bailey's Irish cream.
The owner, Rollin, is very friendly and helped me keep track of the seasonal flavors I had missed or that would be coming up. He's traveled all over the place, which is reflected in the breadth of flavors he makes, and he's just an interesting guy to talk to.
Losing my weekly Mimi's trips was definitely one of the saddest parts of moving away from me. I massively appreciate the place and will definitely visit whenever I'm...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Mimi's Handmade Ice Cream, and I must say, it was an absolute treat for my taste buds! This cozy little ice cream parlor is a hidden gem nestled just outside the city, and it left me craving for more.
The ice cream at Mimi's is truly something special. Handmade with love and care, every scoop bursts with flavors that transport you to a dessert paradise. I opted for the double scoop waffle cups, and I was blown away by the generous portion sizes. The ice cream was perfectly creamy and rich, with a velvety texture that melted in my mouth.
What impressed me the most was the variety of unique and tantalizing flavors they offered. From classic favorites like vanilla bean and chocolate fudge to more adventurous choices like lavender honey and salted caramel swirl, there's something for every palate.
Now, let's talk about the price. At $19.80 for two double scoop waffle cups, I believe the value for money is exceptional. Considering the generous portion sizes and the top-notch quality of the ice cream, it was well worth every penny. Besides, the friendly and attentive staff added to the overall enjoyable experience.
The ambiance of Mimi's Handmade Ice Cream is cozy and inviting. With its charming decor and comfortable seating, it's the perfect place to indulge in your sweet cravings. Whether you're looking for a relaxing afternoon treat or a post-dinner dessert, Mimi's will not disappoint.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Mimi's Handmade Ice Cream to all ice cream lovers out there. The exceptional flavors, generous portions, and reasonable prices make it a must-visit spot. Treat yourself to a heavenly delight at Mimi's, and I guarantee you'll leave with a smile on your face and a satisfied...
Read moreAs an extreme ice cream lover I can say: this place is amazing. The owner, Rollins, is incredibly passionate about making high quality, innovative ice cream and loves to tell you about how he does it all.
He avoids buying flavoring and never mixes and makes everything from the home ingredients if possible (ex: his strawberry ice cream has no artificial coloring or flavoring - only strawberries he made into a puree!). He is always making innovative flavors such as Lime Crunch (line ice cream with health bars), Beet ice cream (naturally bright purple!), Lemon poppy ice cream, Ube ice cream and so much more.
He not only makes traditional ice cream but has experimented with egg custard and has dairy free options too.
It's clear Rollins entire heart is into this business and all he wants to do is make amazing flavors and have you try them! I'm normally a frequent at Jeni's and Pop's but Mimi's has solidly taken over. Also Mini's pints are only $8.99 instead of $12 at Jeni's (and they hand pack them fresh in the store).
My absolute favorites:
✓ coffee Oreo ✓ pistachio ✓ Bailey's (you'll get drunk off this one)
You won't regret it. Go in and ask for the owner. This sweet, older German man will pop out the back and give you a tour through his...
