Found this funky (old skool) joint on line and had to go check it out.... and we were glad we did. As we entered the resturant, we met Sue at the hostess stand. What a geniune and warm greeting we received from her. We told her it was our 1st time in and we explained we were waiting for others. She suggested we wait next door (the bar). We waited for friends and family in the lounge where we met Kimmi behind the bar.... she was a Hoot and (note) later in the evening we found out she was the General Mgr and the mother of our server. Our friends joined us, and Kimmi came out to take their drink order and had some small talk/fun with us. The bar is decorated with lots of Pictures and Back-n-the -Day memorabila. We adjourned to the dining room where we met Emma our server (what a bright and shiny star). She was busy when we arrived in the dining room but was very polite and immediately asked us if we needed any refills. As we checked out the menu, Emma checked back with us for appitizers, and we ordered a couple of starters for the table. Unfortunately, one of our favorites was not available (only reason for the 4 Star rating in the Food category). However, our 2nd choice (brussel sprouts) came out in this huge portion (maybe compensating for the starter that was sold out) - one way or the other, they were delish! Our other starter was Zucchini Fingers (another good choice) followed by our entrees of 2 orders of ShrimpTemura and Chicken Alfredo. We shared a whole bunch of food that evening.
But we really shared (and thoroughly enjoyed) was the "Engaged Hospitality" from a very small staff on a pretty steady evening.
Thank you, Emma, Kimmi, Sue (and the boys in the kitchen (Adam, Kayne & Alec) ---
Highly recommended, and we will be back the next time we...
Read moreMy husband and I had early dinner at Omar's on New Year's Eve so that we could get back home in time to be with our young children and watch the ball drop on TV. He had the steak and I had the fish, and Omar lived up to his full name: FRESH! The salmon was a beautiful, just-caught filet cooked perfectly and served moist and flaky with bright vegetables and a lightly seasoned rice. There was none (and no need for any) of the heavy sauce that tends to cover up less-than-fresh fare during the winter months. My husband looked up contentedly from devouring his steak, which he ordered—and got—rare, and uttered one word: "Perfect." Even the salad was fantastic. Where do they get such fresh greens out of season? Omar's makes their own Ranch, and it's a tasty, lightly creamy dressing that's anything but ordinary.
It's worth nothing that even though we were there for the first seating on New Year's Eve, the service was excellent. The friendly professionalism of all the staff showed how much people enjoy working at Omar's. Our server, Pai, suggested an excellent pairing from the extensive wine list and attended to us promptly without hovering throughout a relaxed, lovely meal. Later, we were thrilled to learn that Pai has been mentioned repeatedly in the annual "Best of Ashland" surveys for her charm, knowledge of fine cuisine, and excellence of service.
My husband and I have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in San Francisco, Napa, Portland and New York. But at present with our kids so young we don't get out too frequently. So what a pleasure to discover Omar's so close to home. I can say with certainty that, when we do get a special night out, we'll be returning to Omar's for the steak and fresh seafood again (and again,...
Read moreThis IS THE PLACE first eating dinner or lunch or whenever they're open. We had dinner and it was very very good! Oyster shooters, clam chowder, steamed clams, to start accompanied with plenty of fresh hot bread, then our mains were the Halibut, perfectly prepared with a beautiful seasoning just a touch of crust but the meat was flaky and melt in your mouth delicious, the fish and chips are the best I've had since Scotland, and finally and perhaps incongruously a chicken fried steak! It was the best I've had. Period. Sorry Texas. While the mains were enough the sides were also excellent, from my potato wedges that had a nice crunchy seasoned exterior and a lovely soft center to the real whipped potatoes seasoned with a bit of chives and butter these were amazing by themselves. Then when we're all done begging for mercy they mention their creme broule and it won the night. Hard crust creamy not too sweet smooth deliciousness. All this amazing food plus 6 adult beverages (they have a full bar) was under $200!!! Blew my mind. This is not cheap food, this is excellent food prepared excellently at a bargain price. If I lived within a 100 miles I'd be here once a week. Finally the people are the friendliest most warm and helpful group I've been around since the 80s. Proactive service! Remember those days. These people haven't ever forgotten. In businesses since 1946!!! Just a real treasure! Treat yourself and visit. Tip your waitstaff the amount you know you should have paid for this...
