My review of a new Scandinavian breakfast/coffee restaurant
5+ out of 5 stars ⭐️
I had the most wonderfully delicious experience at Broder Strand!!
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with the biggest smiles 😃 and stylish modernized decor - it felt like a slice of Scandinavian chic right in the heart of downtown Astoria. I was really impressed by the selection of coffee drinks poured into glass mugs. When I went to pour my cup the jug was empty but within seconds the gentleman servicing the restaurant had a new fresh pot ready for me. The coffee was perfectly brewed and they gave me the bottle of honey to pour in it, at my discretion!
I got two breakfast dishes; one sweet and one savory. The 4-piece “Aebleskiver” (Danish pancakes) were served with a side of strawberry compote and lingonberry jam… Wow! ($9.00) You should have seen my face as I alternated each bite going from jam to compote and back. My second dish was the “Lefse” (sorta like thin crepes) stuffed with ham, Jarlsberg cheese spread & carmelized onions. That plate was paired with house mustard, yellow pickled beets & chives, then topped with two soft eggs… I had to close my eyes as it was love ❤️ at first bite! ($16.00)
My tastebuds were so grateful to get the chance to eat these authentically prepared Scandinavian meals.
The service was very friendly and attentive, and the whole place had a cozy vibe. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur, a foodie, or just looking for a stylish spot to meet friends, Broder Strand is a must-visit. I can't wait to go back!
Compliments to the Chef 🧑🍳 and Sous Chef!

Read moreWhile visiting this restaurant about a week ago, I had an experience that left me a bit dumbfounded. For context, this restaurant is a counter/partial service dining establishment. As we were waiting on our food, a server brought out our dishes to the another table (who ordered after us), walked away, realized that they had given the wrong table our food, picked up the dishes because the table swore “they didn’t touch it”, and brought it right over to us. I should have said something in the moment but me, and my friends, were genuinely stunned as we have all worked in the service industry for 10+ years and all know this is big sign of concern. In my state and experience, as soon as a plate touches a table/leaves a servers hand, it is a health code violation to give that food to another customer. The server did not have eyes on the plate for a solid 2-3min and had no way of knowing if the other customers touched, sneezed, coughed, etc onto our food. The nonchalance and lack of panic in the servers demeanor led me to believe that this kind of behavior is normal. I am really not one to leave reviews, especially in relation to service related issues, but since returning home I have told this story to my coworkers and their similar level of appalment made me feel like I should make my experience known to other customers that are interested in dining here. I also had emailed the restaurant before writing this review, but they did not respond. We were all a little disappointed with the food as well, it was just a bit lacking and needed to be seasoned better, especially for the high price. The vibe was cute, but these kind of food safety issues need to be addressed...
Read moreThis is a very charming old bistro/cafe attached to a hotel with great old sea town charm to it. I went on a Sunday morning and was greeted by a very friendly host behind the counter who was very eager to help us. I wasnt aware this was one of those eateries that you pre order everything up front & pre pay including the tip. The machine asks you up front 15% 18% or 20% or custom tip. So without having experienced any service yet, its akward to me what i should choose and based off the nice interaction we had with the host, i chose 18% which was $15 for our meals. Your given a table marker, grab your own water & seat your selves. The reason for my "average rating" was we had no interaction whatsoever with any staff. Just food runners asking who gets what. Since i had a side plate of 4 strips of bacon, there was an extra plate on my table which no one took notice to clear away. Also the empty mimosa & expresso glasses. All the tables are on the smaller side so with an extra plate in the way and no one checking on us, i was a little disappointed. None of the runners who came after the first asked if we needed anything either. One a side note, the mens bathroom had no paper towels to dry your hands. But the food was great & alot of patrons seemed happy, lots of families. Great place to take mum & dad or a friend. But for me its a no to...
