When I was an actual college student this place scared me, it looked old and it didn’t seem like it’d match my alt/whatever vibe but now that I’ve started coming here I wish I could go back to my younger self and slap em.
This place is good, like surprisingly so. I’ve never been disappointed with the food or… the beer. They have an incredible selection of beer at a good price, a price college students back then and today can afford. The grilled cheese is amazing, and it’s a little known secret… but the vegan dog, let’s just say if you’re vegan/vegetarian they surprisingly have a good selection of food for ya. It’s bar vegan food but it’s damn good.
The staff really makes this place even better. From the bartenders to staff they bring personality that ya don’t find much anymore, it’s a real neighborhood bar despite being tailored to the UT crowd. You’ll find a mix of folks who’ve been coming here since the 80/90s and fresh turned 21 year olds.
It’s a great place to watch the Texas game on Saturdays and nfl on Sundays, and apparently they’re a west ham bar on Saturdays when the EPL is on.
Whether you’re visiting Austin as a UT Alum from the 90s or a 21 year old current student, I recommend this place as a good, still affordable spot to grab food, drink and have...
Read moreI didn't go to UT, so I don't have quite the same history with this place as a lot of my friends even though I did stop by here a few times when I came home to visit, but every time I've been it's good times. Judging by the number of people who also have fond memories of this place, they seem to have the whole "college town bar" thing down cold, and even though I'm a few years out of college I still enjoy going back.
They have cheap pitchers ($8.25 during happy hour, not bad), acceptable food (a mushroom swiss burger for $6, not the best but definitely serviceable), a decent deck, and a great location. Their beer selection is nothing extraordinary, but still good for what it is, with 20 or so taps and a wider selection of bottles. They even have gluten-free beer, which was important to a friend (I can't imagine living that kind of life, cut off from so many beers, but as Donald Rumsfeld says, you go to bars with the enzymes you have, not the enzymes you want).
The parking lot isn't the greatest, but it's not like you're coming to a bar to sit in a parking lot. I wish we'd had places like this where I...
Read moreI went to school at the University of Texas in 1990. I was there for the duration until I graduated. It has never changed from what it was back in the day. It was so wonderful to see the crowd on a Friday afternoon, enjoying the weather and consuming wonderful pictures of exotic beer. Way before there were any such things as microbreweries in Texas, there was the Crown and Anchor pub which was famous for their all glass pictures of Western European beers. It was always the greatest thing to go over there and listen to music in the jukebox and throw darts and drink great beers. I never ever had a dull moment there. Fast forward to 2022 and I went to go visit it with a guy I swam with at the exact same time at the University of Texas. We both relished in our past experiences and how we had grown so much older than the crowd there. If I go back to Austin in the future I will definitely go and visit the Crown and Anchor pub. You cannot...
