Dined at Ruth's Chris last night for date night. I have been looking forward to dining here for a long time, and spoiler alert ... won't ever return. We were seated at the very back of the restaurant, even though it was not that busy. We were in an area surrounded by stacked up chairs, and light fittings that had broken bulbs, looking into the dining room "proper" where there were empty tables. Really felt like a second class citizen seated back there. Enjoyed the bread, and the cocktails we began with. Starters (beef carpaccio and goats cheese and artichoke dip) arrived quickly and did not set a great scene. Carpaccio was meh. The dip contained almost no artichoke but tons of spinach and not really a dip based on its texture. As we just finished our starters we were pressed to accept main course ... except it was not ours! All laid out on our table and we are looking at each other somewhat surprised. Then our attentive waiter arrived and corrected by loading back onto the tray and taking to a table a few yards away. I sincerely hope they enjoyed it a few minutes later, our main courses arrived. Salmon with shrimps (chef's special) did not amaze my wife, the salmon was very overcooked, and all she could add were that the shrimps were nice - the "sauce" tasted like watery butter. My Ribeye (requested MR) was served on a plate that looked like it had done a few rounds without meeting the washing station. It was over MR, close to M. It tasted OK but honestly in places a little "funky" and I could have done better at home in the cast iron skillet. I didn't even finish it, much to the surprise of my wife But the sides ... we asked for roasted brussel sprouts - way undercooked and no sign of any bacon. We also asked for Au Gratin potatoes. What we received were undercooked cubed potatoes that had been very briefly grilled under a pile of tasteless cheese - not the familiar unctuous thinly sliced potatoes with cream and garlic. At least they removed the sides from the bill Seriously Ruth's Chris? This was the most disappointing restaurant I have visited in Austin in our 6 years here. Will never ever return.

Anniversary dinner on a Sunday evening. Pleasantly surprised with an anniversary card and rose petals on our table. The ambiance was pleasant and as expected in a moderately high end steak restaurant. I was somewhat disappointed the after the maitre'd told us to wait as our table was prepared and yet when we arrived at the table it was still set for four persons. Why? We both ordered adult beverages off the menu, a Pomegranate Martini ($15) for my wife and an Old Fashioned ($15) for me. The drinks were prompt and well balanced. Nice start. We then ordered the Sizzling Blue Crab Cake appetizer ($28). The appetizer was well prepared and hot although a bit on the small size. I wouldn't say it was a mouthwatering start but underwhelming and kind of bland but hey it was hot when it arrived. We both order the filet, medium rare. I got the 11oz ($62) and my wife the 8oz ($52) and loaded baked potatoes for us both ($13 each). The steaks were presented on an extremely hot plate with the potato as a side dish. The steaks were cooked a perfect medium rare. Maybe it is me but I enjoy a hint of flavoring on my steak in the form of some garlic or something and there was not a hint of that on these. If you just want "meat" then I guess it was perfect. Just not for me. The potatoes were HUGE, at least one pounders which is what the menu indicated. They were appropriately apportioned with condiments although I did ask for a little more butter. Of course they served bread with butter. The butter was room temperature so easily spread on the bread. The bread itself may have been baked in their kitchen but didn't stand out. Just bread. All in all a pleasant evening with an OK meal. I don't mind spending over $200 for a meal a couple of times per year but have started to figure out even when you spend that kind of money you really are not getting anything extraordinary. The food was good, the service was attentive, and it was a pleasant anniversary dinner. 3 stars for meeting and not exceeding expectations.

Ruth Chris has been a favorite of ours for over a decade, and we’ve spent many special occasions there. After our experience Saturday I don’t know that we’ll be going back. First we were ushered to our seats in the back, it felt like the expansion of a hotel banquet space. The room was dirty – the light fixtures were half out and nasty. Some of the HVAC vents were caked in dust, and the ceiling tiles had nasty brown stains. The room wasn’t the only thing that was dirty – my fork, plate, and both glasses were all dirty as well. Our appetizer, the smelliest crab cakes I’d ever seen there, was delivered but I had no clean flatware to eat with. And the crab cakes smelled very fishy, you could smell them coming across the room. I asked the manager for a new, clean place setting. He assured me he would hand select clean pieces for me and would also replace the crab cakes that had been sitting at our table for a bit as we waited for clean silverware. 10 minutes later the new crab cakes were delivered as I was still waiting for a clean place setting to eat on. At that point we decided to leave. I wasn’t comfortable eating in that nasty environment, on those dirty dishes, and on top of that those crab cakes smelled awful. We went to Truluck’s after instead and not a single item that came from their kitchen smelled fishy or gross like what Ruth Chris brought out with those crab cakes. Truly a disappointing experience at what had been one our favorite places to celebrate.

I tried to take up this matter directly with the event coordinator and I’ve been waiting on someone to reach out to me from the restaurant to address my concerns. It’s been over a month, still nothing. I booked a private dining room for my birthday dinner months in advance. I put a card on file to book the room. Also, I got the approval from the event coordinator that a vendor could come set-up balloons.

Here’s my review:

Although the booking process was seamless and professional, the experience at the restaurant was the complete opposite. When the vendor arrived to set-up the balloons at the agreed time of 5:30, he expressed the manager was unwelcoming and shocked like he showed up unexpectedly. I reassured the vendor that I booked everything through the event coordinator. I’m not sure where the miscommunication happened. The manager also told the VENDOR to let me know that “his employees” are not responsible for the clean-up and we must clean everything up before we leave. RUDE. The vendor reached out to via text to inform me of everything that was taking place. But okay, no problem.

When we arrived, we had to wait an additional 30 minutes so the table could be reset. My party size did decrease from 14 to 8. I expressed to the manager that we were already running late and the extra chairs at the table were okay. He was very rude and short and told me to let him do his job. At this moment, I felt the same vibe from the manager that the vendor expressed. The server was okay, but the manager was not. Also, half of the party did not like their food or drinks, including me. No one wanted to complain because we already felt rushed since the restaurant was closing soon. I spoke highly of Ruth’s Chris restaurant prior to the dinner, so I was embarrassed to say the least. Friends came from all over to celebrate my birthday with me. For some it was their first experience at Ruth’s Chris. My birthday dinner was ruined. At the end of the dinner, we received the check. As I was examining the check, I noticed the gratuity fee was charged twice. I brought it to the waitress’ attention. Like two separate charges for gratuity in the same amount. She brought the corrected check back. It could have been an honest mistake, but the manager did not come to apologize about the mistake or anything. The manger was not personable at all.

I have visited other Ruth’s Chris locations in different cities and always had a great experience. The hospitality is always top tier. This particular location did not meet the standard.

As for hospitality, I would give this location a 2. I will not visit this...

Went here tonight for my 60th Birthday. Adriana was our waitress and was absolutely phenomenal! Unfortunately we forgot to take pictures! The food looked so good we didn't even think about pictures, we just dove in, and it was superb. The Calamari was crispy with a nice sweet glaze, the Shrimp Cocktail had 4 huge shrimp with a perfect tangy cocktail sauce. My girlfriend's mother had a fantastic Lobster Bisque along with their wonderful bread. Her Caesar Salad was a thing of beauty, huge thin slices of parmesan, perfectly coated with dressing. My Wedge Salad was even better, I ordered extra bacon, perfectly crisp, and extra bleu cheese and dressing. Maybe the best salad I've ever had. There was an issue with the Porterhouse being overcooked, just the filet side, but it was medium well, not medium rare and my girlfriend mentioned it to the manger when he came by. He took one look at it, grabbed a napkin and swept it away, letting us know a new Porterhouse with fresh Oscar topping would be right out. Then Adriana came by and let me know they were comping the Porterhouse altogether because it was my birthday and it had impacted our night. It was very nice of them, I would have been happy just to have the steak medium rare. Of course, my girlfriend was paying so that's easy for me to say. Our steak and baked potato were as good as it gets, served sizzling and perfectly cooked. The Oscar topping was fantastic! The crab cake was piping hot with a delicious Béarnaise sauce. My GF Mom had the Filet which was delicious, and perfectly cooked and the garlic mashed, again delicious, even more with a little of their great fresh whipped butter. Then when we were finished, even though we'd declined on desert, Adriana brought out a small cheesecake with Happy Birthday written out in chocolate, it was heavenly, light and fluffy with a sweet cream topping, little dollops of raspberry compote, and some fresh blackberries and strawberries. Folks, for a special time out with family, you really can't do any better than Ruth's, I was born in New Orleans 2 years before Ruth opened her steak house, and I guarantee she'd be proud of her staff for the professionalism, courtesy, and friendliness. I can't say enough about the service we received from all the staff, if Adriana was busy and something was ready, it was served immediately by whoever was closest. The teamwork they showed only comes from good training and great leadership. Well done all, Thank you for a...

This the very best service I've ever had. Bar none! (Yes, I have traveled the world, and I've experienced the very finest venues. :) )

My sis and me lost our dear mum, earlier this year. We decided to make this first Christmas without mom extra, unforgettably special, and we both laughed that Ruth's Chris came to mind for us both, as the place to do that! We had both only been there once before, for mom's 70th birthday (15 years ago), and it was that unforgettable!

So I decided the dinner would be my prezzie to my sis, and gleefully placed an order for an epic holiday meal....The credit card I used, (PNC Bank Boo hiss) was randomly canceled in August, without my knowledge, and this transaction declined. Boo!!

I put the order on another card, and at the risk of getting on their staff's nerves (I wanted everything to be perfect :) ) called again, to double check they received payment, after the previous card declined. They let me know the order had processed with the second payment method...and I would be getting my Holiday Order!!!

YAY

Yesterday (12.25), we were sooooo giddy and excited!! We were so ready for what we knew was going to be worth the wait. And we waited...and waited. I was still excited, acting like a bumpkin who doesn't get out much (acting like myself :P )...and waited...

After nearly 30 minutes, the GM (oh how I wish I'd written your name down, kind sir!!) came out, and told me what happened. The PNC Visa (PNC is a HORRID bank, I inherited them after 27 years with BBVA/Compass...ANYway) decided to try the charge again, after declining me, they put the declined charge through a second time, and approved it! Idjits!

Fabulous Ruth's Chris received two full orders!!

Rather than charge me for both orders, and ruin (and it totally would have!!) the holiday, the SAINTLY General Manager, MIRACULOUSLY "comped" my sister and me our Holiday MEAL!!

THE WHOLE MEAL ... 'DOUBLED' BY MISTAKE!

AND...Not JUST that kindness and brilliance -- to top that off, a lovely bottle of wine ! ... FIVE-STAR fabulous dinner.

You are by far my favorite restaurant, and business in Austin, Texas. I will sing your praises from this day forth! A business that proves....fine people are out there! Doing the Right Thing and making stranger's feel so special and grateful to humanity...on what might have been a sad day, we were elated...

Thanks so so much for your kindness in handling the madness!!

Doni and Valeri Marquart Lifetime Ruth's...
