Came randomly one cold early Jan Wednesday night because nothing else seemed to be open in this neck of the wood in Downtown ATX after 11pm and I had never been here.
So, I guess the namesake comes from the actual little bar itself because there is surprisingly a lot of outdoor and some covered seating.
When I arrived it was literally just me, the bartender, and a buddy of his...why everything was so dead I have no earthly idea.
I didn't really know what to order here, so I had the super nice bartender make me a bourbon based mule. It was nice and strong, no complaints. I then did an "Industry Standard", which I was introduced to by the bartender and a lovely lady who worked at another local bar when she joined us after getting off her shift. If I recall it was a beer and a Jameson chaser.
I think my only complaint would be I still do not know how I left w/almost a $32 tab (that was w/a $5 tip) when all I had were 3 very simple drinks and it isn't like they have any major "top shelf" brands, so I was a bit confused how a "divey" sort of joint such as this was charging $9 a drink when all I have ever heard about this place was how cheap the drinks were...other than my very basic mule, it wasn't like I was ordering cocktails?
That being said, maybe if I ever come back it will be when there is more of a crowd and the drinks will actually be on special so the bartender doesn't feel the need to make up his sales via a single customer. He was so nice too, but I just don't appreciate being gouged and friendly banter should be included with...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe most expensive drink Ive had in Austin. Ive been here a hand full of times and never had this happen. So I assume this review will only be relevant for a few months. I ordered a whiskey and water, then realized thats a drink and asked for the 2 drinks separately. The "bartender" pulls out a dixie cup and pours half an ounce of jack into the cup and says that will be $8. That's so bad I started wondering If this "bartender" had it out for me specifically and singled me out for some reason. Ive never seen that done in my life. I will definitely not be ordering any more drinks from here. The crowd around me beer's looked fine. So maybe this is more of a beer bar? Definitely the most out of ordinary experience Ive had with...

The crowd is hard to fit into a "type": last time I went there were about 3 rounds of bachelorette party pub crawlers, scrubby techies, some hipsters, and some middle aged folks grabbing a drink. I think this bar's location away from the typical "bar" streets makes it a crossroads for all kinds of people, which makes it a great place to people watch - both in the bar and on the busy street it overlooks (5th). The patio is huge, it's all outside, and the staff is really, really laid back and friendly. They also have great trivia on...
