My first time yesterday. A New place in my neighborhood. Wanted to check it out. Line. Maybe a 15-20 minute wait to order. Got a slice of pizza and a Caesar salad. Food is Really Good!!! I loved the Caesar dressing!!! Very tasty. I did not realize that they gave me partially wrong order til I got home with my takeout. Ordered pepperoni, got cheese instead. I also was a bit confused when I paid for my order. After they run your card, there is a "tip" option of 5%,10%, or 15%. I mentioned to the cashier, having been a server, that the tip options were not high enough. Suggested they do 15%,18% and 20% instead. This is where it gets a little weird. She told me that they Automatically Add a 15% Tip to EVERY order. And that the 5%,10% or 15% would be On Top of the Automatic 15% that had Already been Added to my check. As an ex service person, that sounded problematic to me. As a retired service person, I ALWAYS Tip Well. Regardless. It's weird to me that the "Automatic 15% tip on Every Check" is not Clearly Stated. And that many customers, assuming that the tip options at checkout are their only ones, would automatically choose the 15% option, not Realizing that they had Already been charged a 15% "tip". Making their total "tip" 30%. I think they need to Tell people Upfront that 15% has Already been Added to their check. Or give customers the option, instead, to tip 15%, 18% or 20% on their own. The Food was Really Good! I'll be back, but also be more Informed. And check my order Before...
Read moreEdit update: The review below predated their move to the corner of 29th and Remington. Much better atmosphere now, and they do indeed now have more lunch options, including fantastic pizza. My only complaint is everyone knows how great they are so they are often crowded!
This is quickly becoming my new favorite coffee place in a neighborhood with a wealth of coffee options, and I think is the best cafe to occupy the spot in R House specifically so far. The coffee is terrific, and the house-made baked goods not only delicious but one-of-kind. No generic scones and croissants you find at every cafe but amazing tarts, olive oil cake, and for a hearty breakfast, stratas that are out of this world. If I had any wishes it's that they had more lunch options (R House overall is woefully lacking a decent sandwich shop), but I think they are still experimenting with what works for the location. They are somewhat expensive, but given some of their unique and high quality offerings, I find it worth it for a treat.
Staff are very friendly, helpful, and informative. They work fast without seeming rushed, manage POS well, and seem invested in your enjoying your drink/meal. While the coffee and food is high end, they aren't pretentious about it, unlike similar businesses.
Bonus points for their commitment to minimal/no plastic.
Just wish the couches closest to the cafe were more comfortable and cleaner, but that's on R House, not them, so doesn't factor...
Read moreCrazy good food and a breezy vintage euro atmosphere and bright snappy flavor combinations are definitely a natural for this Sicilian style "pasticceria" and pizzeria converted from a classy lil' streamline moderne garage or showroom (complete with retractable garage door wall) set across from the R House food hall. Seating inside the eclectic but homey cafe interior is available as well as tons of al fresco eating and chatting outside at their large corner spanning patio of tables and impeccably designed rain garden and benches; people and food breezing in and out. It's how neighborhoods should look. Pizza is thin crust NYC style with excellent chew and flavor, their Quattro Formaggi with extras like pistachio sets it apart from their regular cheese (both delicious) and are sold by the slice or full pie. Pastries are impeccable - I recently had their melon zuccotto cake and it was moist, fluffy, creamy, with melon and lime; everything I could ever want. They also have granita, halfway between shaved ice and a slushy, currently lemon or coffee. The coffee granita? Unreal - not too sweet, strong espresso with rich whipped cream on top? The perfect summer treat and one way ticket back into the proverbial good life Italian food...
