Square Tavern — Restaurant in Baraboo

If you're a regular there, you'll get exceptional treatment! If not, be prepared to wait and grab the attention of the staff. Poor guy at the end of the bar came in shortly after us and never was even looked at. He had his money on the bar and waited patiently. After about 20 minutes, he left. The bartenders were so busy with the regulars who came in to see their pool numbers and get signed up. We got our beverages right away and had to flag down someone for menus. The food was good. My hubby had to walk down the bar to find someone for our bill. Another complaint I have is, the smokers. Yes, they need to go outside, but why? They stand just outside the back door which is left wide open and the smoke comes rolling in like they are inside. I'm not kidding about just outside. Have traversed to Baraboo for years and always saw this place, expected a classic Wisconsin dive and that’s what you get. This is definitely a local place as it was like a scene of a movie with a record stopping when we walked in. EVERYONE turned… however… they were kind and everyone was really polite and even moved down to accommodate our party which was really nice. The bartender was extremely, rough? I hate to say rough but she wasn’t very welcoming but she was attentive enough to make sure drinks didn’t sit empty and pull tabs got cashed out. A young guy came in to take over and he was extremely welcoming and polite, I’d like to come back when he’s the one running the show. Had my first bad experience here. "Cindy" obviously had a trying day and someone should have taken over. When menu choices were slim I said I'd just get chips with my burger. She grabs a random bag and through it on the counter in my general direction. I told her I'd like different kind and instead of actually listening she grab the first ones whipped them on the back counter and proceeded to grab a 2nd random flavor..also not what I asked for. Both burgers were under done. But boy when it came time to pay our bill she hovered as if she couldnt wait to see what we entered for her tip. Poor poor service.
