I have always eaten carry out and apparently that's where I am going wrong. According to the dine in reviews this place is pretty great. I have always ordered a combination #6. It comes with pork fried rice, fried shrimp, bbq pork, sweet and sour chicken and kung Pao Chicken. A little bit of everything for $13 and one person can eat 4 meals of of one order. I always exchange the kung Pao Chicken for extra BBQ pork. The first time they did not give me the pork for the KPC. Well the KPC was so soupy that by the time I got home my bag broke due to the KP leaking through its carton and pretty much all my food was done for. They refunded me and I tried again. The fried shrimp and BBQ pork were pretty good. Along with the pork fried rice. However the sweet and sour chicken left something to be desired and I got no fortune cookies and no sweet and sour sauce for my sweet and sour chicken. My 3rd time I checked my food before I left and was not happy. There were about 6 pieces of bbq pork in both containers. These are the small containers so when those aren't filled up your just being cheap. The bbq was black and hard from being old and recooked. They replaced the bbq pork with full containers of fresh pork. The difference in the pork was unacceptable. Tonight I went again. Once again I added both containers of pork together and it didn't even make a full container. These are the tiny containers let me remind you. The pork was so greasy that it leaked from the carton destroying the paper bag. Luckily now they put the paper bag inside of a plastic one. No fortune cookie. The sweet and sour chicken was so hard I scraped the top of my mouth on my first bite. The chicken is so dry it's disgusting. The fried shrimp is hard and old and the pork fried rice is pretty much just fried rice. Unless you count the 4 tiny pieces of pork that were in it. I guess I'll say eat here if your dinning in and can have them fix your food if it comes out terrible. Although I have the feeling that the customers eating in get the good stuff and the carry out customers are...
Read moreI regret it took a Groupon to draw our family into this restaurant because Chinatown Restaurant is offering quality dim sum and delicious Chinese dishes at family-friendly prices.
Our family of four arrived after 7 p.m. Friday, so several dim sum choices were already off the board; the full assemblage is available for lunch crowds.
We ordered a pot of tea and a large bowl of hot & sour soup 酸辣湯 ($12.95) for starters. Our dim sum order was small, again in consideration of our late arrival. We chose pork shew my (sui mai) 蟹王幹燒賣 ($3.75), har gow 筍尖鮮蝦餃 ($3.75) and normy gai 八珍糯米雞 ($4.75). I recommend all three, especially for customers with teenagers, who will appreciate the savory har gow and the sweet, sticky rice of normy gai, studded with chicken, BBQ pork, and Chinese sausage.
We explained to our waitress that this was our first visit and asked her to guide us with recommendations. She inquired whether we had allergies or strong dislikes. We answered no. With her guidance, we ordered salt and pepper squid 椒鹽魷魚 ($11.95), Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce 蠔油芥蘭 ($9.95) and sizzling scallops & beef with black bean sauce 鐵板帶子牛 ($12.95).
It is difficult to describe how well our three main dishes balanced. We alternated bites of steamed rice with the salty, fried squid with its tangy (Sichuan peppercorns) seasoning with the comforting, earthy Chinese broccoli. The scallops were small but retained a lovely rich sweetness that mingled nicely with the beef and assorted vegetables in the garlicky black bean sauce.
I left a sizable gratuity to recognize the delicious food and kind service as well as cover the Groupon, which isn’t necessary to attract dim sum lovers. The restaurant is in a vintage strip mall at a surprising location. If you are traveling northwest on SW Walker Road, take a right immediately after the Plaid Pantry on SW Butner Road; that’s easy to do in daylight but a bit tricky if you arrive for a late dinner.
We will return for lunch, so we can enjoy the full assortment of dim...
