The locals flock come here so they say. And it is busy. It is very small and mostly counter seating only, with two tables that are available for seating two or more guests. Count on waiting if you come late, they open early at 5 am. Monday is farmer's market day at the park a few yards away, an excellent way to eat organic fruits and veggies in season, with free samples. You can park in the park if street parking is full, or in the Doctor's office next door, behind their building on the weekends they are not open. The decor in this place is old and has probably been unchanged since it opened pictures of vintage cars, muscle cars, and semi truck cab. Pretty country curtains and a there is a quaint antique red cash register at the till, my wife pointed out the details.
The kitchen is only a few feet from counter seating. Can't say the food was bad but not great either as some reviewers seem to hint. Tried a veggie omelet it had sliced avocado on top, it was okay nothing to write home about, and went for the biscuit and gravy instead of toast, because of good reviews about it. We thought the biscuit itself was good, melt in your mouth and the bottom was not hard, but the gravy although it had taste could use some improvement, either a bit more sausage or a pinch more nutmeg per my wife. It had a creamy texture and not bad at all. My wife had the corned beef hash with country fried potatoes, and biscuit and gravy also as a sub for toast. As she says, all were just okay. The corned beef hash flattened and dry, came like two small patties. Country fried potatoes were crispy outside and soft inside but could use a few chopped fresh onions and chopped bell peppers and diced tomatoes, and seasonings. CASH only by the way, so you know. A little hole in the wall with an "A" rating on the window and they serve breakfast the old fashioned way, not sure if they serve lunch too. A gem in the city of Bellflower that is worth the visit if you are looking for nostalgia and close to home made feel. The Wait Staff don't recall her name was nice and...
Read moreI ordered a steak and eggs, steak rare, eggs over medium, with cottage fries, biscuits and gravy. And coffee. What came to me was Christ's own sandal, stapled to a slab of oak bark. Or maybe it was a roofing tile. Or they served me King Tut's mummified hand. Whatever it was, it for sure was not a rare steak.
And I tried to grin and bear it, I really did. It just defeated the knife they gave me; I could barely cut all the way through it! That meat fought me like it was still possessed by the fighting spirit of the fossilized crocodile from which it was hewn.
So I asked them to try again, but they claimed it was the last steak they had. Maybe it was the first steak ever hacked off an ox and preserved in layers of rock and bat guano for a few millennia so they could serve it to me, I dunno, but it was the last one they had or were willing to cook for me. So I finished my biscuit and coffee --- coffee which was never refilled --- and asked for a modified check.
Things got real chilly in the Godzilla's Toenail We Call a Steak Corral there for a minute, but they acceded and I left, breakfast ruined and maybe the idea of breakfast forever tainted by the memory of that asphalt meteorite they tried to pretend was a rare steak.
EDIT: Don't lie about your food, just make it better. I used some figurative language to describe it, but that steak was past well done. Grey to the center, and there were parts I literally --- not figuratively, literally --- could not cut all the way through. Maligning reviewers isn't going to improve your product; learn how to cook or hire...
Read moreUncle Bud's Kitchen was a small hole in the wall treasure. Very few seats, but worth the wait. Every part of the breakfast was top notch old American cooking. The regulars swore by the pancakes and biscuits and gravy so...we definitely tried both. The pancakes, which are always something we try when hitting a new breakfast joint, were phenomenal. Fluffy and buttery goodness. It's kind of hard to emphasize the phrase "best ever" since the phrase is very over used, but.. best ever. In addition, we tried the biscuits and gravy and very much enjoyed the nice, buttery sausage gravy. Uncle Bud's has been around for 70 years, they learn your name, and it has a very southern East Coast dining feel. It isn't for someone looking for diet options as it really tastes like southern recipes, but if you're willing to eschew your diet for one meal and focus on the whole experience, you won't regret it. I know someone from the south would have their opinions, but since we don't really have these types of restaurants on the west coast anymore that I've seen, it is a true gem...
