Tacos El Grullense C&D #4 — Restaurant in Belmont

I should have known better than to come here for Mexican food. El Grullense "Mexican" restaurants are really hard to find to be good anymore. This one I decided to go to because I was hungry and I was craving the food that I grew up with. But I asked for a chile relleno burrito with the spiciest chili and it's like they took less than a tablespoon of chili and put it in the butt of the burrito because it took me forever to find it when I was eating it and it was a disappointment. There was barely any beans at all and it seemed like it was a big deal to make a simple burrito. Even the chili relleno was not what I expected. It was very much a very poor burrito. I would never come back here again because even the salsas were really horrible. This is something that is very bland to my taste buds of what I know to be Mexican food and it's so hard to find good Mexican food anymore. I rather go to the ghetto to East Palo Alto where there's really good food at Las casuelas. I met nice people but everything is very bland no flavor. I should have known by the crowd of people that came in because they were all either Asian or white. Not to try to stereotype but it's true. The parking lot was really perfect to park. There was no difficulty. It's actually the nicest parking lot but I had to u-turn to get in there and the food was a disappointment. I ordered a hibiscus large drink to go along with my burrito to go and the salsas were a big disappointment. I'll give a little tiny bit of a credit too. The green one that one was good. Spicy but the flavor needs a lot of work. The salsas in general overall not to my liking. It's not authentic. It's something very easy to make. Just put in a f** blender like they didn't care. It was no flavor. It was lazy food for Mexican food and there was no flavor.Too Bland. And I thought it was expensive for one burrito $14 with no flavor and not even what I asked for. I wanted spicy and I didn't really even get it. I would have been happy if there was beans in there as I asked as well as the...

Mexican comfort food doesn't get much better than this. Grullense is the evolved version of a hole-in-the-wall type taco joint. Yes you have seats inside but way more folks lining up to just to takeout. It almost feels like a street market to some degree. And they don't attempt to hide this fact. It is happening. It is meaningful. It is a fantastic experience.

The place looks a bit run-down but I guess they're going for that vibe. The prices are cheap and reflect that street-side feel. However, it's not like dirty or anything. Absolutely lovely but they're going for the everyday comfort food vibe and atmosphere which they pull off well.

Service is great. Very kind grandma who keeps dishing out nachos as you wait. All smiles behind the counter. Really felt like a family running the business from a good heart.

And yes, the tacos are awesome. Plenty of meat for a $2.75 taco. And yes, you can go more fancy. But again, really, there's no need. Simplicity allows the rich flavors of the meat to come alive. Salsa and pico de gallo are all fresh and good. The food here is legit.

Make sure you also get the Horchata labeled under Agua Fresca. Absolutely delicious and rich in cinnamon. Very rare for the Bay Area.

I’ve read some of these reviews and would like to empathize that if you’re looking for a restaurant where you’ll be seated, given silverware and the food you eat YOU consider great then this place is definitely not for you, the restaurant is small but holds a lot of people, I saw families and couples enjoying themselves, everyone was eating, not with silverware but with plastic forks, spoons, you name it but I used my hands, this is the kind of place that feels like home, no one cares what you eat or what you talk about, the vibe is friendly, the food is delicious and the service is amazing, all the staff are very welcoming and friendly, so if you’re a hard working person and want a great meal, this is the place, I’m not from the area, I was driving through the city and stayed at a local motel, found this place on line, took a chance and wasn’t disappointed, so here’s to the management and staff “gracias”, you all made it comfortable and tasty, I’m looking forward to coming...
