Although the Dim Sum here may be far from the best, it's better than expected given that it's in Belmont, and they still have the traditional carts rolling around in a time when many restaurants have switched to a menu system.
Ha Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) - This is the dim sum staple. Skins were pretty bad. Thick and mushy, these were not the skins I was looking for. However, the stuffing wasn't bad. The shrimp was cooked well, and there was enough young bamboo mixed in to accentuate the shrimp's natural sweetness.
Siu Mai - Stuffing was too porky. It needed more shiitake and shrimp for a better balanced and bolder flavor. Overall taste wasn't bad though, and the texture was nice and tender. Good start, but it could use some refinement.
Loh Bak Goh (Radish Cakes) - I like that they pan fried them at a station off to the side and served them fresh, but they didn't make them that well here. The cakes were too mushy and full of starchy filler. The texture should be smoother with more radish flavor. They also needed more Chinese cured meats and dried shrimp to make them richer and sweeter.
Siu Lam Yok (Roast Pork Belly) - Flavor was good. I like that they brushed a thin layer of chee hou or hoisin sauce under the bellies before roasting which gave it a pleasant sweet flavor. The skin was nice and crispy as well. The main problem I had was that the pork belly was on the tough and dry side. It'll be stellar if they can fix that.
Shrimp Balls - These were actually pretty good. They're usually deep fried with flat streaky batter chips protruding from the surface. The batter chips they use here were thinner than normal, and I like their lighter crisp. The shrimp paste stuffing was cooked well and was deliciously sweet and juicy.
Fu Pei Guen (Fried Bean Curd Skin with Shrimp) - It seems like China Village handles deep fried shrimp items the best. The fried bean curd skin was light and crispy, and the shrimp stuffing was cooked well and not rubbery. I could do without some of the filler stuff like water chestnuts and cilantro, but the shrimp itself was still good.
Dan Tat (Egg Tarts) - These were just ok. They don't make the egg tarts rich enough here. The crust was flaky but on the bland side. The egg custard was soft and smooth but needed more eggy richness. They kinda tasted like watered down egg tarts.
All things considered, China Village isn't bad. I'll probably return in the near future since my friends live within walking distance. At least we know to order only fried...
Read moreWow! Where do I begin Went in for lunch and ordered Seafood Chow Fun and thought to myself, what could go wrong? Well little did I know but I came back from the ghastly foul odors bathroom and noticed a gloopy array of noodles swimming in some bland corn starched flavored sauce The fish and shrimp were okay, but if you have weak teeth or dentures beware! Because the Calamari was harder to chew than the brand new tires on my Tesla I could only eat half of the meal before I went to the bathroom and regurgitated the Chow Fun slop Upon receiving the bill I complained gently at first. But upon getting pushback from the rude waitress who said it was my fault for not ordering something else. (I tried to order something else, but everything that looked palpable had pork in it. When I asked her about having it without pork it was no can do. So Chow fun it was) The person at the register would not honor The $10 coupon that was just handed to me. I told him that this was absurd, and the meal should be complementary, considering that I left the remnants of it in the bathroom toilet.
I got angrier and angrier when they said for me to come back in the next time to use the coupon. And I explained to them why would I come back to this place
Places always believe that the customer is right and that should’ve been complementary but not this place
For some reason they decided to use that $10 coupon and I walked away paying eight dollars per something that should’ve been gratis I have some take-home that I was going to give to my neighbors cat, but on second thought I’m just gonna flush it down the disposal because I don’t wanna make my neighbors cat sick
Avoid this place at all...
Read moreWATCH OUT FOR FOREIGN OBJECT in WONTON!
We visited this place in November and found a foreign object in the wonton soup (see in the picture). It looks like a part form stainless steel scrubbers. However, when we showed this to the server, the server said NOTHING about it, no apology, no discount, no nothing.
Today we decided to give this place a second chance, and ordered roasted duck wonton soup. It came out to be only HALF the portion of what's shown in pictures from other yelp customers. We confronted with her and presented the pictute. She just kept denying it and say it's not the same store, even though we showed her the store name.
I am very disappointed. Plus every time I visited, I have to wait for very long time for the server to respond to my request, even during non rush hour like 3pm. Would never visit this store again and please expect foreign object when you order Wonton or any other food...
