Definitely lived up to expectations for a steakhouse with the pedigree of Mastros. My GF picked this location over some others due to the live music, which was very pleasant and different than other steakhouse experiences. Vocalist was very talented and took a request and even came by to thank us for the tip and request.
Let me start with our server, Tyler. He was so awesome! It was my birthday so we started early and already had some drinks and meals throughout the day, so planned to share a steak going in. Some waiters try to upsell, but Tyler said all the right things like agreeing to splitting the bone in rib eye because 1) it’s large enough for two and 2) agreed that bone in rib eye is the best option for steak lovers. He was agreeing to almost everyone one of our selections, to the point I called him out for just being patronizing but he sincerely said he liked our choices :) Anyway, he definitely made up for a couple of shortfalls.
Before I get to that, let touch of a few more high points. Steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious. We asked for the steak to be pre-cut, which was perfect for sharing. Bone marrow added to the steak vs getting the bone marrow sauce was another winner - which Tyler agreed :). Baked potato and Mac and cheese were too much for us, but made for a nice snack the next day. All in all, would order everything but the Mac and cheese again. I’m just not a fan of Mac and cheese, but my gf always has to try it and was barely touched. Bread is served upon request, per the menu but Tyler brought it out without prompting. Loved that. Finally, the drinks and dessert. I was thinking martini, but Tyler confirmed it by adding the blue cheese stuffed olives and confirming the martinis are served in the shaker and really is like two martinis vs one. Don’t sleep on the butter cake. I got the “small” version for my birthday, which is the perfect size but it was incredible. A few high end restaurants give you “their” option, that’s rarely their signature dessert or most popular and kills the intent. Mastro’s gives your their signature dessert and it was amazing. One of the must order items.
Things that wasn’t so perfect. Our table. Was right next to the entrance and very busy. Didn’t seem busy enough to need a table in that location. Views for the “penthouse” overlook parking and other buildings, so not much to speak of. Some of the support service staff were not as friendly. Small item, but presentation of the pre sliced steak wasn’t the best. Compared to places that do this regularly, it was a bit amateurish. The taste was there and the fact they did it for was was awesome, so only adding to provide some constructive critical. Finally, the valet which is likely not part of Mastro’s but in front so people should be aware. $17 plus tip on a Thursday night, which is fine, but they wanted $34 for my pick up truck. A few bucks extra is fine, but double an already outrageous price? I don’t need two spots. Anyway, they did direct me to the parking structure right across the street which was its $5 flat. Very short walk, so it turned out to be...
Read moreIf I could rate this with zero stars, I would. Last night my family went to eat at this restaurant and had the worst experience ever. For a dinner that cost over $400 for 4 of us, they should have offered an experience and meal in line with that ridiculous price. Unfortunately that was not the case. We started by realizing that this restaurant is clearly trying to make up for lost COVID revenue by packing tables in like cattle. Our table was literally touching the other tables on both sides and had us sitting almost shoulder to shoulder with strangers on each side. Too many people in COVID times to feel comfortable and no one asked us for proof of vaccination when we checked in. Our conversation was constantly drowned out by the obnoxiously loud table next to us. The restaurant doesn't even provide bread for free anymore. It's $5 for a bread basket at a high end restaurant that charges a fortune for everything! The steaks were absolutely awful despite this being a steak restaurant. They tasted like they were wrapped in bacon but we were told that it was just the rub and spices. I ordered a chopped salad with steak on it. The onions in the salad were so strong that they made the salad absolutely inedible and made me feel sick after two bites. The waitress came around very sporadically and eventually asked if anything was wrong because I didn't eat my salad or the steak on it. When I told her about the horrible meal including the steaks that weren't eaten, she offered us a free dessert. Considering we were packed in like sardines the last thing we wanted was to stay longer for a free dessert. She should have spoken to her manager and taken some of these uneaten items off the bill but instead they charged us for everything ($400+ bill). I then spoke to the manger who said she was sorry to hear about our experience and offered to give us some credit for "next time." I told her that based on this horrible experience, horrible food, and outrageously expensive dinner, I didn't think there would be a "next time." The proper thing to do was to take the uneaten dishes off the bill but they didn't do that. They left me with the worst feeling considering their treatment and experience and though they took our money in full, they have lost a family of future diners, forever. I can't help to wonder how the CEO, Tilman Fertitta who owns Landry's restaurant group would feel about this. Worst customer experience ever. Do not waste your time, money, or risk your health to visit this cattle car with terrible steaks. Shame on you Mastro's for treating your...
Read moreI had a laughably bad experience at Mastro's on Sunday.
When we first sit down I notice they are playing "Mother" by Meghan Trainor which is a fine song but didn't seem to fit the vibe of a nice steakhouse restaurant. I would soon be praying for Meghan Trainor bops (back to that in a minute).
Our waiter comes and greets us - she is a friendly enough woman, no complaints about her, she offers us their table bread service for $5. I understand inflation exists but $5 for bread service feels cheap. Either don't offer it and put it as an option on the menu or give free bread.
We put in our drink order and food at the same time. For food we ordered the maple glazed bacon steak, wagyu meatballs, italian chopped salad, petite filet, 22 oz rib eye, truffle fries, and the macaroni and cheese.
After what seemed like quite awhile our drinks hadn't arrived when our salad and the maple bacon appeared at the table. So we got our apps before our drinks. The drinks showed up soon after.
My mojito was grotesque. I don't know what syrups they use but it was just bad. I sent it back for a glass of wine which arrived much faster and was good.
The maple bacon just tasted like salt with a dusting of maple syrup. Salt was the theme of the meal apparently. There was no harmony to the flavors. It also the texture of a hunk of fat.
The italian salad didn't have enough dressing to make it flavorful but I feel like it could have been good if they fixed that.
The meatballs were I'd say probably the best thing brought to the table the entire night, but still not in any way exceptional.
My petite filet was again - just salted. It was cooked perfectly how I described I wanted it so I will give them that, but the seasoning was just salt.
I didn't eat the rib eye but my husband said it was also incredibly salty, but noted it was also cooked perfectly - a rare Mastro's win.
OH I almost forgot - the live entertainment. In a city with endless incredible musical talent Mastro's somehow manages to employ the worst professional singer ..ever? She sounded off key and out of breath. I missed the pop music that made no sense.
The mac n cheese was fine. Again - salty. The fries were quite good, and for $45 for fries they should be good.
LA has seemingly infinite great restaurants I truly cannot imagine how this...
