My daughter and I moved here in 2015 from N.Y. and have been on the hunt for a real slice of pizza in Maine since. We found one that is acceptable in Wells, but it never really filled the loss. The funny thing about N.Y. pizza is that it's amazing hot out of the oven, reheated from fridge, or the next morning out of the box left out on counter over night. I've always been willing to try a new place but after 10 yrs, lots of wasted food, and wasted money my hopes were defeated to date. Whenever I hear "it's just like NY pizza" I just roll my eyes and move on. My friend had mentioned she still hadn't tried this new place in Biddo called Pengs and I just blew it off as usual until a couple nights ago when I wanted pizza, I went online Mon night but they were closed and thought gotta remember to try them this week. Today is Wed, on way home from work I remember I wanted to try them so I placed and order to pick up at 615. I am always late, got caught up with something and by the time I got pizza it was 710. I told gentleman at counter I was very excited to try this place seeing as I am from NY and have been searching years for a place in maine that can rival a NY pizzeria. I did tell him I would be gentle seeing as I was an hour late picking it up. The inside of restaurant is exactly what you would expect in Astoria NY at any local pizzeria. A few small tables with people eating at them. I joked with counter person/ possibly owner that there was one reason that no one outside NY can make a N.Y. pizza but would see how they measured up. Took the cheese, pepperoni with jalapeños and hot honey, and slice of cheesecake home to see if they even came close seeing as some of complaints I saw in reviews talked about sauce, not enough cheese, small dining...........
💯% NAILED IT!!!!!!!!
I don't have a photo because I grabbed a slice of cheese while on the phone with daughter, who is visiting her dad in NY, and ate the entire thing. It was absolutely everything that NY pizza is. I even told her when she gets home she has got to eat there. I'm not into niche fad foods, I'm more like if it's not broke don't fix it, but even the pepperoni with jalapeños and hot honey is great. Its the perfect amount of sauce and cheese. It holds up hot or cold. Nothing slides off the slice if u don't have a plate. I finally get the best of both worlds the ocean and my pizza. Didn't try cheesecake too full, but assume I will be equally as pleased.
Congratulations I wish u continued success, and lastly all I can say is the Hudson and Saco Rivers must be twins...
Read moreI was very excited to check out Peng’s, we ordered a cheese pie to get a base line read of the pizza. Staff was super friendly upon picking up, online ordering was easy, and restaurant was clean- all great stuff! Got the pizza home and was delighted to see such an amazing looking pie staring back at me. The crust looked divine and everything smelled great. I bit into my first piece and the crunch to chew ratio of the crust was awesome, but I was quickly distracted, at this point all of the flavors should have been meshing together to create the ultimate bite, but to my disappointment, it failed to happen. It was the sauce, it took this from a phenomenal experience to mediocre in record time. It falls flat, there is absolutely no seasoning or depth of flavor to it- it lends an off taste that doesn’t go with the top notch quality of the other ingredients. No sweetness, no spice, nothing- it was an insult to the rest of the pie. It tasted like raw tomato paste spread on the pie, there was a very strong tin canned taste to it. My husband and I were disappointed. Everything else was spot on, absolute quality. Moving here from NY, we get so excited when a new pizza place opens and especially with such amazing reviews (I still left you 5 stars to not sully your impeccable ratings thus far- if not for the sauce, it would be 5 stars, no brainer). I want to love this pie and order it again, but the sauce really ruined it for us. We will try one of your pies without red sauce and give that a shot. If you switched out the sauce you are currently using for something even as simple as puréed San Marzano tomatoes, it would be all you need and I think you would beat every single pizza place in Maine, seriously. It’s missing that fresh, sweet, real tomato taste balance. You have been able to achieve a crust that I have yet to find in Maine, I thought it only existed in NY, NJ, & CT. You guys are doing something that is so very needed here, Maine pizza is underwhelming at best, Otto was decent until they got too big, now it’s just overpriced, inconsistent, and undercooked chain restaurant pizza. There’s not a lot that compares to what you have/could have in this state. The potential that Peng’s has, in my opinion is huge and this is why I had to write. A couple of small changes to the sauce and I believe you will have an unbeatable product in the...
Read moreLately weve been trying out some of the eclectic restaurants on Biddefords Main Street. Now that we have visited Peng
s and had The Best Pizza Ever, it will be harder to try anything else! First off, it is a nice, relaxed atmosphere, very clean, and the staff is welcoming. You can order a basic red or white 16
pie with your selection of toppings on their soft chewy sourdough. It has authentic Italian-style crispy charred bubbles at the edge for a little crunch. But their signature pies are the heart and soul of Pengs. We had the toasted pistachio white pie with pecorino, scallions and pickled Fresno peppers. Every bite was a party in the mouth! The red pie we got had sausage, pecorino, oregano, spicy honey & pickled jalepenos. Wow - what an amazing flavor! We cannot say enough about the lemon onion white pie we tried. The flavor combination was just luscious! And the Vodka sauce red pie with pepparoni; mellow sauce; spicy meat. Yum! All in all, Peng`s is a wonderful addition to the downtown Biddeford... Read more
