I debated if I would post a review or not but in the end after sleeping on it, I decided why not, since there was zero regard/effort to make my friend and I feel welcomed after the greeter at the door who was pure sunshine. All the way from FL...I was very excited to try since it was my first time in Boston! The decor was REALLY BEAUTIFUL inviting and seemed cozy... seeing the staff with all the other patrons, felt we would receive similar interaction, it was a tease.
By the time we were ready to order, on 1 of the dishes I was debating to order- I asked with southern pleasantry smiling if able to put the peppers to side. The server responded "I'll just say no peppers, the kitchen will get annoyed."..said hastily and kinda cold...at that point it was weird for us BUT still wanted to give them a chance, I'm not hyper sensitive and she could be having an off day were my thoughts or the kitchen could give her unecessary grief as she eluded to, which isn't fair to her either. I can extend grace to keep it moving.
I'm a proud wife to an amazing husband, mom of 5 girls and was taking a girls trip to exhale and not be in the kitchen for a couple days. I dont want to insinuate anything but I have a shorter haircut & I'm African American, my friend who is Asian with longer hair, not sure if they thought we were a couple but Boston seemed pretty open minded even IF we were that...however we are just 2 mature(cause old is a curse word in my world lol) ladies hanging out from our families for a weekend before the holiday grind.
After the food arrived which was given very dryly from another staff member. OH YES!!! I do recall...the 2nd kinder soul was the guy who gave us water and I believe the bread/butter but only saw him for that exchange. We were never checked on again.CRICKETS...no warm exchange as the other patrons that didn't look like us, and the server checked on others around us several times, sharing laughter & making sure they were good. We felt sadly isolated in the end and I didn't even think about this until my friend mentioned both points while at the table, I slept on it & thought- I see the world thru rose tinted lens allot of the time, maybe I missed a couple ques?
I'll definitely be back to visit Boston but won't bring the Middle Eastern husband here nor her Hawaiian one, they both are a bit more vocal to ask on the spot and make sure we aren't being overlooked... and I can tell the staff can hold their own weight here as a response easily and instantly without a care.
In the end, the next time I saw our server was when she brought the bill and she assumed we were on 1 bill and asked if we enjoyed the food. Southern charm with genuine smiles in action instantly and easily..."yessss, thank you soooo much..."its super simple to be kind whether someone deserved it or NOT. It's EASY...it wasn't fake because she has a right to be treated nicely despite. We shared a free lesson on how to do it and didn't expect a tip for it. Happy for those who had better experiences and this is just feedback in hopes to encourage better customer centric service, not the kitchen's preference if someone has a request, the meal costs the same... with or without peppers...
Read moreWent on a date night to the north end of Boston for some pasta. With plenty to choose from, we looked at top reviewed places in the north end and came across this one. Walking by it, I was overwhelmed by the crowd outside and it took me a minute to figure out how to and where to put our names on the list. The gentleman who wrote our names on the paper was very friendly, passionate, and open about the restaurant. For a table of 2 on a Saturday, we waited about 20-30 minutes. I saw other tables of larger parties were waiting upwards of 40-50 mins.
After being sat, we were greeted by a very friendly waitress and she continued that kind service that was met at the door, which is why I gave the service 5 stars. We were treated with some bread (cold, but soft) and oil and peppers and Parmesan which was great. Drink prices were very reasonable for a north end restaurant and we got a couple which came out quickly.
After placing our order, we noticed a lot of tables were waiting for food as well. Overhearing a conversation another table had about waiting so long for food, we gathered the kitchen was really backed up. It didnât bother us, as we heard the proportions were generous for what you pay. After another round of drinks and even some more bread offered kindly by the waitress, our food arrived about 45 mins after we ordered. And large portions they were!
I got the Big Alâs Arrabbiata, which was described as cut up chunks of chicken in a spicy Mariana sauce. We also got an order of the pink vodka sauce and added some protein into it.
My dish was okay. I was not sure if it was waiting for delivery at the kitchen as it arrived a little colder than expected. The flavor was okay too. I think it could have used a little more seasoning and lot more heat to it. I ended up adding a generous amount of pepper flakes to the dish to give it the kick I was expecting. Which is subjective for a review as everyone has different opinions on it, but to me what was described was not what it got.
The pink vodka sauce could best be described as essentially a different colored Alfredo sauce. The flavor in it tasted heavy if the whipping cream and butter combo, with the butter being the overwhelming taste of the dish. The chicken on both dishes were cooked well, one of mine was a little dry but it was a weird piece so I donât blame the kitchen that.
Overall, the service and the atmosphere were great. The service was kind, friendly, and welcoming and the atmosphere was fun and close. A little loud at times, but still very nice for a date night. While underwhelmed by the food flavor, I hope to give this place another chance when they are not slammed to really see what they can prepare. I do recommend this place for the...
Read moreI went in to this restaurant yesterday. I come to the North End every couple of months or so to visit a specific restaurant, La Contes (sadly they are closed until Tuesday). They actually happen to be right near this establishment. Go there instead of going here. Much better service, and food!!
My reasonings for the 2 star is because of the server and the food.
First the service, the server was just kinda off putting. Iâm not sure how to explain it other than you can tell she doesnât want to work there. She just seemed really miserable and took quite sometime to even address us. I was often asking other staff for things like bread, sauce, and so forth cause my server was no where to be found. She wasnât the worst server Iâve had but youâd expect better since itâs such a high tourist area.
Onto the food, the calamari tasted frozen. There was something off about the texture and breading. It was giving something I could buy at Daveâs Market and make at home. Typically when serving calamari it comes with peppers. There werenât any peppers and not a pinch of salt in sight. It was bland and honestly not worth the $20+ !!!
Onto my entree, the carbonara was actually not bad at all. The sauce was the perfect consistency and taste. The bacon was wrong though. It appeared they used some sort of American bacon when thatâs not what the recipe calls for. I have made this at home, with the same bacon. Itâs disappointing that I paid $20+ for a meal when it wasnât even used with the right ingredients. I understand using the cheaper bacon but if youâre gonna do that maybe make it cheaper in general.
Now my husbands meal was HORRID. He ordered the fettuccine alfredo with chicken, the pasta was home-made, not bad at all. As for the sauce, technically the star of the dish, was horrible. The sauce lacked flavors and was the complete wrong consistency. My husband ordered the alfredo cause he wanted to compare it to mine. I make it often at home, from scratch. He said and I quote âit taste like itâs from a jarâ. When you are in the North End of Boston thatâs the LAST words you want to hear. His dish was about $26, and a waste of it at that. Itâs sad seeing this as part of the representation of North End.
Please look over your ingredients, realize cutting ends is just gonna make a customer cut you off!! Edit: Looking at the owners response I doubt this will be taken as constructive. Before you even say something silly like âwhy didnât you tell a managerâ cause my server was already not the best. Your employees represent you. Her attitude was giving you wouldnât have cared for the issues at hand. Speaking to a manager doesnât always resolve an issue. I still wouldâve had to pay for...
