Red White is a vegan ramen place. Their “meat” is called Soboro and it’s listed on the menu as a vegan meat & tofu mix. Their website states the vegan meat is soy based. It’s crumbled up nicely in the soup and makes for a great texture all in all.
Great little spot on Newbury St in BOS. Has a few 4 tops inside and a couple 2 tops. Outside allows for a 2 top and a table at the landing of the stairs that allows for 3. Being outside would be best. You get to enjoy not only the food but the weather and the scads of eclectic passersby. No reservations taken. Quick service, small menu.
They simply have but 6 ramen bowl choices and a Rice Buddha Bowl w/Roasted Miso Avocado which looked insanely wicked but I had to have the soup. The bowl is considerably large w/plenty of food. In fact, I read a review that suggested to order a side of extra noodles & have more for later. They were right.
I ordered the Dragon Breath. The man told me it’s super hot, definitely made sure I understood it’s hot. He pointed out the Masterpiece & said it’s not only his favorite but it’s also their best seller. I stuck w/the Dragon & Don got the Masterpiece. We were trying 2 different bowls to share.
The Dragon was great w/plenty of flavor. It was hot enough & while it may be considered “hot” to others it was not super hot at all. Especially if you enjoy spicy food. Although, halfway through the meal I consistently had to wipe my nose & there was a point where my eyes watered. IMO it’s not “super” hot as served but definitely savory.
The broth itself is “creamy” and the noodles are perfectly cooked w/a great soft but chewy texture. We enjoyed both bowls. Don may have liked his choice better because he didn’t come after mine much & this man loves his hot & spicy food more than I do.
They don’t take reservations and they only serve bottled water & cans of Spindrift carbonated water. If you turn down their offer of $2.50 bottled water they will still provide a cup of water w/ice. Without even asking them for it. I’m mentioning it because I thought it was a great gesture on their part. Though maybe he really thought I needed that water since I was ordering the super hot bowl. Red White is a definite must try if you find yourself on Newbury...
Read moreI'm extremely disappointed in REDWHITE and would not recommend it to anyone. I came here with a coworker last year while in town for a conference and remembered really liking it, though I had forgotten that I needed to pour in quite a lot of red pepper flake packets to get my ramen spicy. I thought maybe it was an off day, or maybe I had just forgotten to order it spicy.
This time, I rushed from the train station, excited to come back since I'm in town for a few days. The host was extremely rude and impatient while I was deciding what to order. I specifically asked for my ramen "spicy," and she assured me they could "make any ramen spicy." When my ramen came, there was no discernible spice whatsoever. I asked for extra spice, and they gave me la-yu (chili oil). I almost never use la-yu because it upsets my stomach and adds needless calories, but I went with it, trusting their judgment. It did absolutely nothing. I even tasted the la-yu directly, and it was somehow less spicy than the ramen itself. No spice whatsoever, truly.
At that point, I added a hot sauce packet I had in my bag--still mild. I asked for red pepper flakes, and the server kept pointing at the menu saying it was $2, and that the first portion was free but after that I'd have to pay. I explained that I had ordered spicy, didn't get it, and the extra spice they gave me wasn't spicy either. He just repeated that I'd have to pay, even though the menu said nothing about this. Meanwhile, I still hadn't received what I ordered.
By then I was furious, and my stomach hurt from the oil. I ended up dumping about 20 packets of black pepper from my backpack into the bowl (yes, really), and it was still barely spicy. I forced myself to finish what turned out to be disgustingly oily, bland ramen.
I will never come back here and will no longer recommend it. The food was not what I ordered, the staff was rude and unhelpful, and the experience was miserable from...

Recently stopped by this place for a quick meal. As someone who typically isn't a big fan of vegan ramen, I didn’t have high expectations. However, the original miso Ramen was quite good. The classic miso taste was prominent, and the addition of vegan cheese as an extra topping, elevated the dish by providing the much-needed umami that vegan ramen often lacks. The combination of soboro (vegan meat & tofu), corn, onion, arugula, and garlic oil also added a satisfying mix of textures and flavors. It was a pleasant surprise to find a vegan ramen that didn't compromise on taste.
In addition to the ramen, I also tried the roasted miso avocado and the mac & truffle. Topped with melted cheese, the avocado was another umami bomb. The roasted miso added depth to the avocado, and the melted cheese enhanced the overall flavor profile. I also enjoyed the macaroni, which was infused with truffle oil, adding a luxurious and aromatic touch. While the portions were on the smaller side considering the price, the flavor combination made it a worthwhile indulgence.
Although I’m not very experienced with vegan ramens, RED WHITE did much better in terms of capturing the essence of traditional ramen flavors while catering to a vegan palate. If you decide to try the ramen from here, I highly recommend adding the vegan cheese as an extra topping. It truly enhances the dish and makes a significant difference in...
