If you’re looking for a solid spot to enjoy a meal on Newbury Street, you have to check out Sonsie!
Sonsie has an incredible menu full of international cuisine. They utilize a brick-oven to bake their pizzas and focaccia. The menu is incredibly unique and there is something for everyone!
The menu offers a wide variety from a variety of cuisines. They offer a great selection of small plates on the dinner menu. Fresh oysters and tuna tartare is on the menu for the seafood aficionados!
They also boast about their house-made Gyoza/Dumplings. They have three varieties: pork & ginger, lemongrass chicken, & shiitake mushroom with kale. The gyoza is made fresh in-house! The sesame soy sauce is highly recommended for dipping!
In addition to that, they also offer hand-stretched, brick-oven pizzas and focaccia. If you’re in the mood for a larger meal, they have a solid selection of pastas, seafood, roasted chicken, burgers, and more!
If you’re a dessert person, the menu is a bit limited in that regard. They also have a small selection of soup, salads, and sides.
We decided to stop in to enjoy dinner on their outdoor patio. Unfortunately, they had moved service to inside with the French-doors open. It was like sitting outside, the breeze was phenomenal.
The music was bumping and the bar/restaurant got more busy the later it got! They do offer a late-night menu that consists of their brick-oven pizzas & their House-Made Gyoza Dumplings. They’re one of the few spots in the area that serves this late.
We started with the Crispy Calamari to share. The portion was generous. The Crispy Calamari was cooked perfectly, not overdone or chewy like many places. It was served with giardinaire and a cucumber-yogurt sauce.
The cucumber-yogurt sauce truly elevated the dish. I actually requested our server complement the chef, as it was a new twist on the menu item. We LOVED it.
We also ordered a “Margherita” pizza to share. The pizzas here are hand-stretched and baked in a brick oven. I have never seen a crust so thin, it is phenomenal!
They utilize house-made, fresh mozzarella on the pizza. The sauce is fresh san marzano tomato. They finish it off with fresh basil. A typical pizza here is six-slices.
Their beverage/mixology program is also spectacular. We both ordered “The Dana”. Citron vodka, lemoncello crema in a glass with a sugar rim. The drink hit all the right notes, incredibly smooth and delicious. Mixed perfectly!
The service was top-notch. The waitress was excellent, always ensuring we were well taken care of and that our water glasses stayed full. She was quick and efficient. She even checked to ensure nobody had any food allergies. Due to the amazing service AND food, we will certainly make this one of our regular spots! The service is spectacular!
The service and quality of the food TRULY earned 5-Stars. If you’re looking for a late night bite & a solid beverage, they’re open until 1AM...
Read moreIf I could give Sonsie zero stars I would. I went to the bar with a friend for drinks last night on 5/27/23. My friend was talking to another bar patron who had turrets syndrome. I was looking out for him and my friend asked if he wanted a drink, on us. Next thing I know, I was CONFRONTED by the SONSIE BAR MANAGER and the BOSTON POLICE as I was minding my own and moved my bar seat entirely to the other end of the bar to get away from this gentleman with the turrets. The gentleman with turrets took our kindness for weakness and thought we were making fun of him. instead we were looking out for him and even offered to buy him a drink!!! So of course his story must “be right” since the BAR MANAGER CALLED BOSTON POLICE to tattletale about a completely fabricated, misconstrued story between myself, my friend, and the turrets guy. I’ve been coming to Sonsie for over a decade. I was absolutely disgusted by the bar manager’s actions. I don’t appreciate her tattletaling to Boston police and ACCUSING me of something I didn’t even do. You should not be a bar manager or a manager of any establishment, miss! taking the turret guys word and automatically calling the police! I was horrified and felt violated to be accused of such absurdity! This woman, bar manager at Sonsie on the eve of May 27, 2023 should NOT be a MANAGER of ANY establishment, let alone a bar. Frankly, she needs some serious counseling on how to handle customers or just people in general. I will never step foot in this establishment ever again and give them any more of my business. After being a LOYAL CUSTOMER for OVER A DECADE I was extremely horrified by the bar manager actions to a fabricated story without consulting me first. And, frankly, extremely offended of how you can treat a customer or even a person in general the way I was treated last night. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Quit the bar management scene or management in general if this is how you treat others. P.S. to the Boston police officer that FOLLOWED ME HOME all the way to my house, that’s harassment and frankly, this officer was out of his jurisdiction as he followed my ride - no I was not driving - out of Boston city limits to my home. I was born and raised in the great state of Massachusetts and have lived in the Boston area for most of my adult life. It’s sad and I pity the Boston police officer who also acted out of line. At the bar and worse, FOLLOWED ME HOME outside of Boston. I will not state the city I live in for privacy reasons. That’s complete violation...
Read moreIf zero stars were an option Sonsie would earn it. This was genuinely one of the worst dining experiences of my life, and that's including realizing a few miles down the road that the drive thru didn't give you any ketchup, and a minute after that it was the totally wrong order.
We came in later in the evening for dinner. We didn't have dinner. 20 minutes after being seated a server finally acknowledged us, and strongly implied whomevers section we were in had dropped the ball. No big deal, it was getting towards closing, it happens. We were asked for drink orders, and the server ran off, still 15 minutes before the regular kitchen closed. We we're never asked if we wanted anything else, despite the the restaurant serving pizza for another half an hour.
Nearly 20 minutes later we got our drinks, and were able to at least order a desert. Drinks were poorly made and didn't line up with menu descriptions or ingredients. The desert was average, but we weren't given a spoon for another ten minutes, and then seeing we had started with dorks the waitress left with the spoons. Till then we hadn't been asked how we liked anything. When we finally were the desert was cleared while we were still eating it. We then had to wait another 20 minutes with wallets and cards on the table before someone came back to let us pay.
I can understand some of these issues if a restaurant was busy, but it wasn't, the bar was crowded but otherwise the place was nearly empty, there was more staff than patrons. And with that many things were just inexcusable. Why when you notice a table has been sitting for nearly half an hour without even water would you not flag it to the manager as an issue? Why would the manager who was wandering around aimlessly this whole time not notice this herself?
This wasn't an issue of being too busy, or too short-staffed, it was an issue of simply not caring, because very basic effort could have prevented it all. The hostess could have communicated to the server that she sat a table. The server who eventually came could have done the basics like asking if we wanted any food. The bartender could have asked for help if they were too busy. The food runner could have noticed we didn't have the right silverware and made sure it was dealt with. Through all this the manager could have done the basics of observation and corrected a problem before...
