Up until I first went to Pupusas Lover 2 for the first time a few weeks ago, my experience with pupusas was limited to the Boulder Farmer's Market. (I've been known to order a pupusa there when the other stands don't look great, and I've neither been wowed nor disappointed.)
We went to Pupusas Lover 2 in an attempt to cater to my vegan mother and carnivorous husband. I was relieved to see that the menu is more than amenable to vegans. My mom and I ordered pupusas, and my husband got the churrasco. "Love at first bite" is an understatement for the reactions around the table. Papusas Lover 2 serves pupusas that are NOTHING like the farmer's market pupusas. These pupusas are made with a delicious masa, and the fillings are delectable ... I especially loved the frijoles, queso, and loroco. My husband was freaking out over the churrasco, which had thin, well-seasoned meat that reminded him of the stuff he grew up eating in Peru.
Since then, we've been back three times. We're slowly trying other dishes, though it's difficult not to order our favorites. Today, we ordered a mixto platter, and it was absolutely incredible. I think that's what I'd start with if I were new to the restaurant! My husband liked the sweet corn tamale so much that he ordered a second one for dessert. The platter was the perfect mix of sweet and salty, and could easily feed three people with a considerable appetite.
As far as take-home goodies, my husband and son both really like the rice cookies. They're a little bit dry (intentionally), and they taste like a lot like the cookies that are popular in Peru. My favorite is the quesadilla, which is a cheese pound cake. It's not much to look at, but it tastes incredible, especially if you like rich desserts that aren't cloyingly sweet (e.g. cheesecake).
I have to include a little note about how sweet and accommodating the staff is. We always come in with our two young children, and despite any havoc those two kids might cause -- spilled water/coleslaw, running around the restaurant, etc., everyone is super nice to us. Today, when the water was spilled, someone came over immediately with a mop and a reassuring smile. This is a great place for families.
TL;DR: Stop hemming and hawing, and go eat at Pupusas Lover 2. As soon as possible. You...

From the moment I walked in the staff was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant space is clean and inviting. But really why you should go here is the food!
I ordered the Revuelta (mixed - pork, beans, and cheese) and the chorizo and cheese pupusas. Following my order, the sound of the cook slapping the masa between her hands filled the restaurant as she made the pupusas fresh. The pupusas were served with pickled shredded vegetables (think slaw with less mayo more vinegar) and a thin salsa for pouring over bites of pupusa. The flavours all balanced well and complemented one another in addition to each dish being very tasty on its own. I was also served some spicy salsas, red and green, to go with my meal. The red salsa provided a distinct spicy pepper flavour and the green had a more diverse flavour and less heat.
I also ordered horchata. As I ordered the horchata, my server asked if I was familiar with El Salvadoran horchata. I was not so she was kind enough to bring me a sampling of each of the aguas frescas on the menu. The horchata has no milk and is nicely spiced with a toasted flavour. The cashew fruit (yes fruit, not nut) juice was new to me and lightly sweet with a refreshing finish. The passion fruit juice was clearly juiced in house and had a bright flavour. Finally, the mixed fruit juice was well balanced and flavorful (made with strawberries, apples, carrots and a few things I didn't catch). All in all, you can't go wrong with any of the aguas frescas!
Frankly you can't go wrong other than to not eat at Pupusas Lover 2! Check it out!
P.S. they also have other things on the menu like pastelitos (like empanadas), tamal, and make-your-own pupusas! I can't wait to...
Read moreOrdered a plato mixto ($35), a lover plate ($30), and nuegados ($12) to go. As another reviewer mentioned, the mixto plate is the way to go if you don't know what to order and you've never been there before. Lots of variety, taste, and textures and decent portions considering how filling I learned pupusas are. The lover plate was also good, and was a lot food, however, I wasn't so sure I could distinguish between some of them. Most also tasted cheesy. Very cheesy. If you like cheese, this is a great dish to get and you might have leftovers if you're not sharing. This isn't a complaint - I recommend enjoying with friends. The nuegados were okay, but not a great value considering you only get three. They are essentially deep fried, bland and crispy donut balls. However, the syrup that you are supposed to eat it with taste like a combination of maple syrup and brown sugar. It's definitely different from the typical syrups you might find at a diner. It might be worth giving it a try if you are interested in this sauce.
As I only ordered to go, I don't know what it was like on the inside. The lady on the phone seemed to only speak Spanish, which may make ordering over the phone difficult for some. Otherwise, I would probably want to visit again to dine in and enjoy the food as it was meant to be tasted. I would recommend this place for something different, and...
