While this was rated one of the best sushi restaurants in Bozeman Montana, overall we were disappointed as we were expecting more of authentic Japanese experience.
We ordered the Widespread panic, spawning dragon, le poisson, shappenin, temporary insanity, agedashi tofu, and some sashimi.
The sushi took a very very long, much longer than usual, like 40 minutes, and when it arrived it looked very underwhelming and very simple. First of all the shappenin was not good at all because the flavours did not seem right and it made me choke. I personally hate avocado so i removed the top layer. The other ones it was quite hard to taste the fish; it was rather bland and the rice was overpowering. On a positive side i enjoyed my meal because the sauces were nice.
The sashimi was good and didnt expect any better, but the agedashi tofu was quite soggy and made with medium tofu, not soft tofu, which affected the flavour. Authentic agedashi tofu melts in your mouth; it didnt do it here, and the broth was bland and just mainly soy sauce, missing more crucial ingredients like dashi. Presentation was also very off putting as well.
Overall this is about the best it gets in a remote state like montana and didnt expect sushi to be as good as nyc, but this is from the persoective of a new yorker. It was tasty overall but could use some more work.
But the real reason why this review has one star is because i just discovered that the restaurants negligence led to the deaths of two elderly people from eating toxic raw mushrooms in april, and this manslaughter is unforgivable and should have caused the restaurant to close permanently. I didnt know that. Truly horrible and I wont eat here again because of that. Three stars for food and service, one star for that and two preventable deaths. It is a SHAME that so many are completely unoblivious of this! No accountability whatsoever i sincerely hope this restaurant closes down as 40 people got sick and there were many health...
Read moreI don't usually provide low ratings, esp. for long-time favorite restaurants that our family loves...however, my experience last night was astonishing and really not OK. Gone was the safe pickup option for to-go orders by the side door. Instead, to pick up my order, I had to navigate by a large group of unmasked people (people old enough to know better) waiting to be seated via the front door. The waiting area was standing room only and the restaurant seating areas were also packed. With Gov. Gianforte lifting the reduced restaurant seating requirements and people not fulfilling his "personal responsibility" mask wearing request, we will not be back until Dave's Sushi can provide more safe options for their customers or at least a safe pick up option for those who wish not to be exposed needlessly to unsafe conditions. I overheard many other waiting people commenting on the no maskers and how many people were all standing so close together. The hostess seemed stressed as well. Providing a safe work environment for your staff is also important stewardship. On the topic of stewardship, could you also consider using to-go order containers that are possible to recycle in Bozeman with either #1 or 2 labels? I'm staring at 18" x 4" round plastic platter that I have to toss in the landfill instead of the Bozeman green recycling container. I'd be happy to pay a little extra for more sustainable packaging. We have seen this same issue with several to-go orders in the past as well. I hope Dave's Sushi will put more responsible operating decisions back into place for everyone's safety. I understand how hard a time it is for small businesses. However, there's no way we can come back until safer precautions are back in place. The one star is for the...
Read moreNot worth the risk of getting severely sick or dying. I highly recommend looking up Dave’s recent health code violations as well as the articles detailing how this restaurant killed two people and made many more sick due to negligence. The owner has tried blaming the issue solely on morel mushrooms despite nobody else getting sick from the same mushrooms that were shipped to other restaurants across the state, which indicates the chef at Dave’s improperly prepared them.
*Rumors, eh? Shame on you for your continued negligence and abysmal response to an avoidable tragedy.
From the final report:
“The study found that based on what people ate at the restaurant, morel mushrooms were “strongly associated with developing a GI illness”. CDC analysis compared illnesses from people eating at Dave's on April 8 and April 17. On April 8, the morel mushrooms reportedly underwent some cooking process of being marinated in a sauce immediately after the sauce had been boiled. On April 17, the mushrooms were reportedly uncooked and marinated in a sauce that had not been boiled. Illness associated with consuming the morel mushrooms was reported on both dates, however, consumption of morels was more strongly associated with developing illness on April 17 when the morels were reportedly prepared without any cooking process.
The report also points out that restaurants in different states received morel mushrooms from the same supplier as Dave’s. Those restaurants were contacted and said they cooked or sauteed their mushrooms and reported no complaints.
The investigation found that based on the illness that people reported, it was consistent with morel mushrooms not being properly handled,...
