I'm not really sure how this place has such good reviews...we ordered a grilled cheese meal for my daughter and the Figs Pig sandwich. Both were very underwhelming, and portion size was very small for the price paid. I don't believe they make any of their bread from scratch so I don't really understand how they charge so much. The grilled cheese did not appear to be grilled whatsoever. Maybe just thrown in a toaster oven so cheese could melt?? On top of that, the cheese was not melty-gooey because it had been sitting too long (we waited for at least 20-25 minutes to get our food). My Fig's Pig sandwich was sooooo SALTY OMG I had 2 bites and I couldn't eat anymore! It was that bad. I wanted to drive back across town to get my money back, but didn't want to put my family (with small children) through that. However, the chips they make are good. Buuut the free cookies they give out for putting in your Five Star rewards taste like Chips Ahoy soft and chewys. All in all this place was a fail and we will never...
Read moreI try to shop local and this checked that box. It seemed average-priced for the offerings and the decor felt nicely done for a Santa Cruz spot. They have a good assortment of local beverages, focused on beer but juices and such as well. The shop-made chips are a nice touch, but a bit soggy compared to those at for instance "Ellis" in Salinas. The grilled-cheese was a solid representative specimen, but didn't elevate it. The burger looked good, but my normally hungry teen didn't finish it for reasons of "Well, it's OK". One hot sandwich (the aforementioned grilled-cheese) and a couple cold offerings was the extent of the vegetarian offerings, which for Santa Cruz feels...

We were looking for burgers and were glad to find Surf City. The Philly cheesesteak is their most popular and it is excellent. The ghost pepper Jack is subtle but provides the right amount of kick. The burger was also surprisingly good, and they cook the patty to order. The Vulcan Mindmelt was okay, basically a bacon cheeseburger but in a sandwich form. A little underwhelming. The homemade chips were a nice touch. The subgarden salad was a little too sour with the dressing. You can add chips or salad for $0.99. Fries were good and came with the burger. About $16 per item. All in all a good find and...
