Shoots Fish & Beer — Restaurant in Carlsbad

This place was very disappointing. $5.50 for a street taco that is gone in two bites. The shrimp taco had ONE piece of shrimp on it. I’ve never seen that in my life. The presentation was subpar as you can see in the photo. The flavor of the shrimp taco was good but both tacos I got were cold. The shrimp was slightly warm but the rest was cold. Not a good sign if a place serves cold tortillas for your taco.

The service was lacking. It’s a bunch of young kids who work there and they don’t have a good process down. I got my two tacos and my boyfriend didn’t get his poke bowl until about 10 min AFTER I was done eating. We had to go ask them about it because we thought they forgot about us. There was not many people there so still not sure why it took so long.

The tuna in the poke bowl was a weird color. Did not look very fresh. My boyfriend said the bowl was subpar and the tuna didn’t taste fresh.

The poke is decent, I would add slightly more salt but that's subjective.

The bluefin hand roll was extremely confusing. They used rice that was still basically steaming hot and it turned the nori into a soggy, chewy mess. I ate it the second it came out and it was already soggy. And the rice to fish ratio was heavily skewed to the rice for an 8 dollar handroll. It's a simple problem to solve, would be infinitely better if they used properly made sushi rice at a cooler temp and with a bit more vinegar.

The pescadero taco was decent but the fish was a tad dry and it's a street taco for over 5 dollars.

We had never been to this location before, so we went because they were listed in our REPEGS app (we saved 20% by using that)! We were blown away by how warmly we were welcomed, how easy it was to get our REPEGS deal, and the food was amazing. We had the Bang Bang Cauliflower, Fish n Chips, and 3 different tacos, along with our favorite Artifex Kombucha. All fresh and delish! We sat at the bar - everyone is so friendly and happy, staff and customers alike. Very great Friday night date night experience. Glad we took a chance.
