After taking a trip back to the Comstock on the V & T train my group decided to go get something to eat. So in keeping with the theme of the Comstock's era we headed to Carson to eat at the Fox. It was previously known as "The Firkin and Fox"
First a little history: This restaurant is on the first floor of the historic St. Charles Hotel which was built in 1862 as two establishments that merged. Rooms are available to rent out. In later years it became a stage stop as well.
I am so glad we choose this restaurant. Our waiter Lee was on his game. He was kind, friendly and courteous. I don't eat grains or refined sugar due to autoimmune illnesses. I always feel bad when trying to find something to eat. He wasn't shocked or annoyed but unbelievable considerate and said he would go check. He was back in a flash. The first item I was interested in had sugar. I then choose the Garlic Rosemary Ribeye which was absolutely the right choice for me. He also was not put out by us asking for 4 separate checks.
I was hungry and I ate every bite. The mashed potatoes were creamy and luscious, the vegetables were just like I like them with a lite bite in them and flavorful beyond belief. The steak had a wonderful rosemary and garlic flavor that tasted heavenly. Two of the people I was with had the fish and chips. They were very complimentary about their meal. The fourth member of our party had the Guinness steak and mushroom pie. She said it was quite tasty and it was evident as she ate the whole thing. All four of us agreed that we would recommend this restaurant to our friends.
Love that this spot is historic and in a beautiful and quaint part of town. It is located across from the legislature and the Nevada State Capitol Mall. Because of the wonderful and charming atmosphere we all chose to sit outside by the fire. The two that didn't have any jackets didn't notice the cold air. We had a delightful dinner and wonderful conversation with our waiter Lee. We were informed that brewpub began brewing their own beers. For those who like tastings they do have flights that you can purchase as well as other beers.
I look forward to the next visit to this restaurant. Lee added a lot to our experience of this restaurant. I think he must also be a comedian. He was courteous, quick and caring. I sure hope his employers are aware of what an...
Read moreThe reason for the 2 stars is due to the fact that the manager comped our meal and they’re “short a cook” but, I’m extremely disappointed about our experience this evening here. I’ve been coming here for years since before the menu was limited and have always loved the food. Tonight is the first time we brought one of our daughters with us and I’ve hyped the place up so much that she chose this for dinner tonight. The service was extremely slow especially given it being a not even half full restaurant and a Thursday at 6:30, but also the server who took our order had no knowledge of the menu whatsoever. She didn’t even know what tequila I was talking about when I ordered a tequila and tonic. We ordered drinks and appetizers and they came about 15 minutes later, we placed our dinner order right when those were delivered…45 minutes later and my 2 year old is looking around wondering why he doesn’t have his Mac and cheese that we’ve ordered here many times before and was awesome. Then we realize “we’ve literally been sitting here for 45 minutes waiting for dinner.” We flag someone down, not our server because she was nowhere to be found, and then she goes in the kitchen and a few minutes later they’re bringing out our food. Only problem is, our food has been sitting in the window for the last 30 minutes it seems because everything from my daughters wings to my fish and chips is dry as hell and chewy. My sons Mac and cheese had a powdery consistency like cornstarch and I didn’t allow him to take a bite before I did because I wanted to check the temperature, which I am so glad I did because I took a bite and spit it out immediately. It was literally noodles and a cheese additive and cornstarch and milk with no seasoning. I wouldn’t let my kid eat this. At that point I asked for the check and told them to charge us for the drinks and apps and we want to leave, I appreciate that the manager took care of our bill but also we just wasted the one night we have to take our kids out to dinner on this place and now we are coming home to make our kids dinner. It needs to be said either way, this place has been slipping since after Covid and just...
Read moreTonight on 12/30/2024, We ordered 2 chicken pot pies and Artichoke dip with chips. First we were impressed with the size of the chicken pot pie but that was it. The crust was undercooked, sunken in and the scant amount of filling was super super salty and tasted awful. The Artichoke dip was just ok but hardly any chips. I got refunded for the 2 chicken pot pies on Grubhub, I threw out the 2 chicken pot pies! We were very very disappointed. I called to speak to the management. Only a temporary manager available I was told the real manager was not there. She also told me that the owner lives out of the country in Mexico and he will respond back to me or I will get a call back when the real manager is available. I am awaiting a call or Pm as of now, I will update after speaking with someone. I still was out the delivery fee and tip for the dinner I thought I was going to eat . I don’t know about the other menu items, however I would stay away from those chicken pies….
UPDATE .12/31/24 thank you for your quick response. Also your restaurant manager reached out and explained how different things happened ( Grubhub 1 hour late to pick up, should have made another pie and had Grubhub wait or return , also finding a different to go container that fit the pie better or take off to go menu, also to look into the excess salt ( that could just be my preference tho and not others) . All in all I can say the owner and Manager were very polite and wanted to hear and try to resolve this issue. No monitory comps were offered or asked because Grubhub did refund for my 2 pies. Also, I understand now why the artichoke dip was just ok, it was also left out a...
