Full disclaimer I'm not from here. I'm from where you walk into a donit shop at 5 in the morning and are immediately greeted by the smell of recently baked dough and coffee. The donuts here, when I showed up early in morning didn't look fresh at all nor taste fresh at all. No fresh dough smell like I had smelled every time I visited a shop back home, not here.
However, the sign of the owner's wall read "baked fresh every morning", laughable. And I even asked the one guy working the shop in what looked like his pajamas, "were these baked this morning?" To which he replied a somewhat "sure, yeah".
I hesitantly chose and paid for my donuts and of course they tasted like I could've went the grocery store and paid for them myself there. Nothing about it warranted the cost especially. Some of the donuts had a very sickening after taste about them even.
Only thing I barely enjoyed were the kolaches. That's because everything else was cold. I think I understand it though. People don't come here for "fresh" donuts as described on the store wall. It has to be for the convenience or perhaps some sort of nostalgia for folks native to the town.
If you were thinking of making a trip to this donut shop and think you're gonna enjoy a fresh donut early in the morning, don't leave your home, don't even get out of your bed. Its nothing to write home...
Read moreOur first visit was on last Saturday and they were totally sold out. It turned out that they had only just opened 2 days prior. We went by on Sunday before church and they were still working out some issues with their menu board, pricing, and register. We opted to try again this weekend and I went by early (5:10 AM) on Saturday and it went a lot better. After talking a bit with the owner, they're still working on training their staff who were pretty much all new, and working on getting everything necessary for the menu items. As a a former small business owner I understand these struggles. Also, there was a comment about the pricing. Their register was having a lot of issues the first week and some confusion over the menu. I hope to see this resolved soon. For instance, they sell a 1/2 dozen cake donuts (which sell alone for $1.00) for $6.00, but if you add raised/yeast donuts which sell for $1.50 each it changes the price. I had seen another customer who had an issue with this expecting to get their four cake donuts and two yeast donuts for $6.00 instead of the $7.00 that it should have been. All in all, I enjoyed my experience, the donuts were very good, and I look forward to seeing how they progress in the next few months.
Edit: I was able to take a few more pictures on our last trip to give a better overall view of...
Read moreUPDATED At first I was upset regarding this bakery's odd hours. It seems to be closed often; I'd even witnessed several customers walk up, trying the door only to walk away with downtrodden faces and grumbling why it’s closed randomly during the week.
Only upon my 4th visit did I make it into Castle Rock Donuts. And I was so un-disappointed that I HAD to revise my negative review. The owner, whose name I believe to be Danny, is a family-oriented Asian man speaking very broken English, which is often translated by his employee. Nonetheless he is a generously kind fellow, and his donuts are stellar.
You can get most treats filled with filling of your choice at no charge; I find the bavarian cream a no-brainer. And those donuts definitely have a homemade taste to them, the kind which melts in your mouth leaving you feeling a little...
