You can smell the wood smoke for a mile as you approach. That's good advertising. The smoke penetrates the pork meat, so the light sauce that comes pre-applied is not overwhelming, though as another reviewer states, I would prefer my meat naked. This pulled pork is some of the best I have ever had. It rivals Sweatman's, and may even top it for depth of smoky flavor.
The rotisserie chicken is the smokiest, most tender you'll find, with perfect crispy skin and saturated with smoky goodness.
The ribs are generously portioned and falling off the bone tender, and again the mustard sauce is not needed, though the smoke flavor shines through regardless.
The coleslaw is simple: cabbage, mayo, and what I believe to be bread-and-butter pickles, but it is crisp and good alongside the smoky meats.
The hash is only meh, and while it has a decent consistency it lacks flavor and begs for some hot sauce or other accoutrement. This said, I readily acknowledge I have been ruined by Sweatman's BBQ for all other hash. This is second only to theirs, so it qualifies as pretty decent hash: no weird chunks or gristle, plenty of meat.
I read rave reviews of the skins, and took the advice of others to call and order a pound ahead of time, or miss out. The skins are different from any I have ever had, and while I am not sure I am a fan, I can't stop eating them. There'll be a bit that's tough and chewy, and then a bit that's puffed like pork rinds, then some that's meaty and fatty... it's an adventure and rather addictive, and when you get a piece that's good, it is VERY good, so you go fishing for more.
The sweet tea was fresh and well-balanced, and the buns served with the meal as well as to go were super-soft and tasty, if untoasted. They were even better toasted at home later. We got a bag of buns, 2 pounds of pork, a rotisserie chicken, and a pint of hash to go in addition to our meals to eat at the cute picnic tables on site.
There is a lovely lakeside green area to enjoy your food, but no bathrooms, so be aware of that before you head out. Also be aware that they take cash only, and local checks. But don't push it with these ladies, just give them cash. The prices are more than fair, and 4 people ate for under $40.
While I'm glad I went, I can't say this is my new favorite. But they are a solid second, and should we find ourselves in the area, we'll be stopping for some pork and one of those...
Read moreWe have been travelling between Cincinnati, OH and the South Carolina coastal area for over 25 years. Based on BBQ lure and many investigations, one of the stops we began to make was at Hite's BBQ. Husband always has a cooler ready to go and even plans his drive so we can get there when they are open. We have eaten at their picnic tables but mostly pack as much as we can for family, friends, and mostly us. Recently my husband was on the trip alone and stopped for his "fix." The credit card machine was doing something crazy and we were overcharged. Upon discovery, we reached out to Hites and they immediately refunded our whole bill. That was not necessary, as we purchased products. I think they are about the nicest folks anywhere, and that's on TOP of their high quality food. Thanks you guys! We will be stopping again soon. Read moreArrived Sat afternoon (they were due to close in 2 hours), very little food left. Given choice of 1 lb pulled pork with mustard sauce, 1lb ribs with sweet sauce, or hash, bought one of each. Ribs were disappointing, sauce was a crispy coating and meat was tough/chewy. The hash was okay, not much flavor, and the biggest disappointment was the pulled pork. Mustard based sauce is not my favorite, but over the years I am accustomed to it, if I can taste the pork. Here, I had to rinse off the sauce to sse any pork, and I still could not taste the pork, just the mustard. I realize some people like lots of sauce, but when I buy pork, or a steak, I like to taste the meat first, than decide how much sauce or...
