I was eagerly looking forward to visiting The Grind Coffeehouse during our family trip to Cedar City, drawn by the cozy ambiance and positive word-of-mouth. The setting did not disappoint, offering a welcoming and comfortable environment that seemed perfect for enjoying a coffee break with loved ones. I ordered an espresso and an almond croissant, anticipating a delightful pairing. The espresso was served promptly and lived up to my expectations—rich and robust, a fine example of a well-prepared coffee. However, the experience took an unexpected turn with the almond croissant order. After a 30-minute wait, which dampened the initial excitement, I inquired about our order, only to discover it had been forgotten. In an attempt to rectify the oversight, a plain croissant was hastily provided instead of the almond one I paid for. This mix-up was disappointing, particularly because I was looking forward to the specific treat I had ordered. While the atmosphere at The Grind Coffeehouse is indeed inviting, and the coffee meets the mark, the oversight in service and the mix-up with the order led to a less than satisfactory experience. It’s my hope that this was an isolated incident and not indicative of the usual service standards, as the potential for a truly enjoyable visit is clearly there.

I went to college here a decade ago and even worked for the Grind when it was family owned. Seeing that it finally sold felt bittersweet (they listed it ten years ago). On the one hand I miss the more cozy, mismatched furniture feeling it had back then, but on the other hand the new in-house roasting is pretty cool. The atmosphere is basically the same: laid back. They also kept some of the old furniture despite the renovations. While the new menus are easier to read, the flair of the old chalk menus was more homey. That said, the coffee tastes how I remember and is still Cafe Ibis. The espresso here is very bitter and strong, so be warned. Food was good. Kolob salad was HUGE and tbh I didn’t even finish it! Glad to see vegan options. My only critique is the use of Califia oatmilk. Personally, I prefer Chobani in my coffee especially iced coffee because it doesnt separate which Califia does. Chobani also makes an extra creamy version for latte steaming. All in all, nice to stop in again. There’s def more space for students to study, and it would be a nice atmosphere for it.

Normally it’s really good, but I just got a latte that looks like it was made for looks instead of flavor. Watching the barista create it, they filled the cup with milk, added some ice, and then drizzled the espresso shot over the top until the cup was full, leaving about half the shot unused. It tasted of slightly bitter milk, not like a coffee drink at all! And like I said, normally they’re really good, but I’ve had a few different drinks show up as 90% milk with the memory of a flavor added in, which for over $5 is not worth it at all. I like going here because when they get it right it’s fantastic, and I rather support a local business instead of the unending hoard of Seattle’s Starbucks, but whenever I get a drink that’s this watered down it makes me wonder why I spend that much money on it.

EDITED 05/22/2022 From 5 stars to 2

The coffee shop has a new ownership and it went downhill from there. The entire old staff left which is really unfortunate. It was common for the previous staff to remember your name and what you regular order is. The new staff does seem to change every week and is not interest in any relationship building. In addition, the menu and decor changed quite a bit. They used to have a handwritten board behind the counter with all kinds of interesting drinks. I agree that there were too many choices back then and it needed an update. But those new plastic boards above the counter and the ordinary Starbucks offering are just simply boring. I lost its vibe completely!

The new ownership is doing a lot of needed remodeling. However, the got rid of the previous stage where they plan to grind their own coffee. This is not only going to be loud but just simply unnecessary. It’s not a high quality coffee shop by any means - this is a hangout spot for students, festival visitors and tourists. I would have loved to see more events in that space as they had years ago.

My husband was a daily regular for over 3 years and stopped going. I rarely go myself anymore either. I hope this new ownership changes direction and interacts more with the community again.

Oh, and I forgot: the MUSIC sucks now. It used to be so good now it’s just charts and pop songs. So annoying.

This was my PREVIOUS REVIEW:

That’s THE spot in Cedar City for all your coffee or decaf cravings. The students from the college next door as well as the actors/artistic staff from the festival create such a inviting and homey atmosphere. It feels that you enjoy your time with friends in their great living room. I promise, you’ll have a hard time leaving.

The staff is so friendly and the options are huge. They even have a vegan menu now which I just love! Highly recommend to try that out. Their baked goods and pastries is another thing you shouldn’t miss.

Another not negligible fact: they play...

Oh, The Grind Coffeehouse, how you have stolen my heart! I recently had the pleasure of visiting this gem of a cafe, and let me tell you, it was a revelation. From the moment I stepped through the door, I knew I was in for a treat. The warm and inviting atmosphere was the perfect setting for a morning pick-me-up.

But, oh, the coffee! It was like a symphony of flavors on my tongue. Rich, smooth, and expertly crafted, it was truly a delight. I ordered a cappuccino, and the presentation was almost too pretty to drink (almost). The perfect combination of espresso, milk, and foam had me swooning.

And don't even get me started on the service! The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, answering all my coffee-related questions with a smile.

But wait, there's more! The sandwiches! Oh, the sandwiches! Freshly made and expertly crafted, they were the perfect accompaniment to my coffee. I opted for the avocado toast, and let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

In short, The Grind Coffeehouse is a must-visit for any coffee lover. The excellent coffee, superb service, and delicious sandwiches make it a true gem in the heart of [insert location]. I'll be back again and again, and I can't wait to see what other culinary delights they have in store. Five...
