This place can be hit or miss depending on what time of the day you arrive, how busy they are, who your server is, and what you order. All the stars would need to line up to have a great experience. My suggestion is to avoid having high expectations, and just come for the food.
Fish fillet with preserved egg and Chinese parsley: tasted very light, healthy, and has that homemade feel to it has slight savory taste to it. I'm not too sure what the base is, but I'd I had to guess I'd say either chicken or pork judging from the oil sitting on the top of the soup. big pieces of fish portion is enough for 4 bowls great during the cold weather and is filling when shared between two people
Dumpling noodle soup: light tasting broth the dumplings are basically wontons with a crunch to them. They are a bit on the smaller side the vegetables seem to vary depending on what the restaurant has in stock. It used to come with bok choi, but it came with cabbage this time around noodles are the egg noodle kind. Nothing good or bad stands out, so that means they are decent. I personally like to add a bit of hot oil and white pepper to any of their Hong Kong style noodle soups. When these two combine with the hot temperature of the soup, it brings a heart warning type of feeling to my stomach which I enjoy very much
Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce: very generous portion. Had to take home the leftovers not much to say about the taste. It's just steamed with no seasoning, which is the way it's supposed to be cooked.
Other notes: if you want the soy chicken noodle soup, you need to come earlier in the day. They are usually out of soy chicken after 6pm.
Service: it depends who your server is. I usually come after 6pm on the weekday so they usually aren't that busy. Our server is friendly and attentive.
Atmosphere: it's fine for what it is. Don't expect much. They have these vibrant blue tables, wooden floor, wooden chairs, and a golden brown color wall. Most of the dining tables and chairs are centered toward the center of the restaurant. They have a separate Chinese menu hanging on the wall if you can read it.
Taste of Hong Kong is overall pretty mediocre. They don't excel at anything, nor are they terrible. Despite being hit or miss, I'll be returning for many more meals because you can't get this style of Vietnamese/Cantonese cuisine in the local area unless you drive out to Falls church or...
Read moreTransplant from Georgia, so I am a frequent at Canton House, Oriental Pearl, Royal China. I wanted to find a decent dim sum place in VA and didn't want to drive to Marks Duck House bc of traffic, so I went to Taste @ Hong Kong and immediately walking in at 1115 it immediately reminded me of Buford Highway, older chinese guest speaking loudly and eating, and many other asian families enjoying dim sum. So I was immediately thrilled as this was a good sign it'll be okay. Once seated I asked for hot tea and the lady asked for my order, I was a bit confused as I saw the dim sum steam cart right by the register so I just said dim sum, but she was asking what specifically, so once I told her she went back to the cart and got it for me. It wasn't too much longer that another lady started pushing the cart and stopped right at my table to ask if I wanted any but I just pointed to the table I already had it. The carts circled the room maybe twice while I was eating, but the servers were pretty attentive and if you just asked for something, they'd go get it from the kitchen or carts for you.
Overall, I was extremely happy. I stuck with typical shu mai, hargow, rice noodle with shrimp, taro dumpling, and taro cake. It was all hot and delicious.
I def will return and told friends they need to come with to...
Read moreOverall, it's a nice restaurant. The staff was friendly, and the prices aren't outrageous, although it could be lower IMO.
Food, that's my main issue.
1st, I didn't try a lot of things on the menu, but the noodle soup was quite bad. Noodle soup should come with ample broth, and enough noodles to compliment the meal. Not here.. the bowl was 80% noodles, and the broth was luke warm at best. The pieces of beef were very bad quality meat as well. Flavor not that great either. The claypot dish was actually very good, but it was mostly rice, not so much meat and veggies. For the price of $12, I would expect more food, especially considering it's a Chinese place.
The hot tea was good, and so was the wonton soup, and spring rolls.
Again, this place isn't that bad.. but it just isn't that great. It's a welcome addition to the area where we have mostly all American-Chinese places. This place actually serves real Chinese food (as well as Americanized). They serve things like Frog Legs, and other things you normally won't see in other places.
With all this said, I will be going back, simply because I like Chinese food, and this place is more authentic...
