Nestled in a quaint plaza next to the Fillmore, Bocao offers a lot of wow. Surprisingly, this restaurant is a very unique niche of Dominican & Asian fusion with offerings such as fried rice mixed with meat cooked Dominican criollo style, bao buns with chicharon, traditional sushi as well as (cooked) salami sushi rolls. I ordered chicken mofongi, queso frito, and a cocktaill fashioned after the traditional tamarind drink mixed with Brugal rum. Surprisingly, the food and vibes checked out. Service was also impeccable. While I didn't dine indoors, I did notice the bar and several table setups inside. Outdoors, there's a nice patio spanning the length of the building with traditional dining setups on one side and patio lounge setups on the other. Based on the signage, I gather this becomes a bar and lounge at night on the weekends. TV's are located throughout the establishment showcasing global sporting events, for fans. Thanks to the music and scenery, I was transported back home to NYC to Mamajuanas or La Marina, which brings me to my next topic of hookah offerings. While there is no set hookah section, the smoke was not intrusive from the other tables. My server was professional and polite. The service overall was rapid from greeting/beverage order to closing out the check and everything in between. The checkout process is smooth via qr code access directly from your phone. The only issue I have is with parking. There is a 2 hour metered limit monitored by a private company at a steep rate of $22, including taxes. This astronomical rate to dine for a mere 2 hours is one you would find downtown for a sporting event not dining, especially in a small area. Parking is limited, but there are other paid lots in the neighborhood. Street parking was forbidden on the entire block with cones. I would recommend Bacao, especially for the warm weather days to enjoy the patio.

I will be the first to admit, I didn’t go in expecting much and I was WRONG. This place looks like most other restaurants in high-traffic, hip areas. Cute style, packed with young servers, loud music, and a lot of patrons with meals that looked Instagram worthy. They’re a dime a dozen in cities and usually the food is fine but nothing that stands out from the others in the pack. I was really hungry and really craving sushi, and we had about an hour before our show began at the underground so I figured we would get decent food in our bodies. It may be because I went in with lower expectations but I was surprised at how GREAT everything was. And our server (whose name escapes me) was queen of upselling/menu suggestions. Loved her. We ended up with four sushi rolls (2 fusion and 2 a little more traditional) plus the appetizer special (essentially Spanish-style octopus— with potatoes, tomato based sauce and spicy mayo). Plus a pitcher of sangria that was half off on Fridays. The service was incredibly fast. The food was delicious. My husband and I both agreed we want to go back and try other items on the menu even if we aren’t going to a show afterwards. The only reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that there is not a ton of stuff on the fusion rolls without meat. All the rolls are custom-made so of course you can ask for things to be omitted, but once you omit a bunch of things I’m sure it would compromise the taste of the roll. I also understand that Dominican food is pretty meat-centric so I’m not trying to knock an entire cuisine. I’m sure it’s amazing, just limited my options a bit. That said, highly suggested! We will return!

A fusion feast for the senses! Our visit to this incredible sushi restaurant with a Dominican twist blew our taste buds away. The food was beyond delicious, every bite was a burst of flavors that danced on our tongues. The fusion of traditional sushi with Dominican ingredients created a symphony of flavors that delighted us. The stunning decor with vibrant colors that truly set the stage for an unforgettable dining experience, and of course it has some perfect spots for you to snap some pictures for your Instagram. The staff is absolutely amazing! Their attention to detail and warm hospitality made us feel like VIPs. (One of the girls from the staff saw us struggling with the pics, and she came to us, help us with the pics, poses and was so nice and patient, Thanks Roxy, you’re the best) If you’re a foodie looking for a unique culinary adventure, this place is an absolute must-visit! 😋 What did we have? - Mofonguito Yuca: Smashed yuca bites topped with ropa vieja (shredded beef), chicken and shrimp. - Ropa Viejo & Cheese Empanadas: 3 beef stew empanadas served with spicy mayo on side. - Picadera: fried salami, sausage(longaniza), fried cheese, pork-belly, gyoza and tostones. - Taki Taki (Roll): Steak, bacon and cream cheese. Topped with guacamole, chimichurri and eel sauce. - Mar y Tierra (Roll): Shrimp tempura and cream cheese. Topped with sweet plantain, guacamole, ropa vieja(shredded beef) and eel sauce. - South Beach (Roll): Shrimp tempura, cream cheese. Topped with sweet plantain, guacamole, crab meat, eel sauce and guacamole sauce.

Edit: Update and changes over the years.. The Parking Situation had changed! Curbside is no longer an option, parking is now pay $20+ most times around the music factory. So plan accordingly, if it's a Thu - Sun it's busy busy at night, there is a line to get in and the check ID. More and More it's turned into a lounge for hookah and quick bites. especially if it's after sunset. During the daytime it is super easy to get in and not as busy. with the full menu available. The Menu Has Changed! also not all items are available all the time now. after a set time, you have a limited menu for bar food, quick bites. no longer do they have the bowls as an option unfortunately, which was one of my favorite.... What once was a late night option for amazing food and vibes has definitely changed. If you are going there to try the food and eat. Please remember arrive during the day before sunset. make sure you aren't going during the times of an event at the music factory, or you'll pay with time and money just to come to the restaurant.

Went here last Saturday. The line was ridiculous which intrigued me. I was alone and. Just wanted to sit at the bar. My initial experience was they let certain people slide past the line which I found bias. However a extremely kind security guard found me a seat When the others didn't seem to care. Once inside I will say the food and drinks were delicious. They had my favorite lychee martini which immediately leveled them up. Hookah was on point and I consider myself a hookah connoisseur. At 11 the restaurant turned into a lounge and they pick up all chairs at the bar. They were about to take the chairs myself and other guests were on while eating then they let us keep them until we were finished, which was the polite thing to do. I really enjoyed myself. I stayed for quite a while. I was all by myself and the atmosphere was not uncomfortable in anyway, and the DJ was lit! I do plan on returning and may even throw a birthday bash there.

Food as always DELISHHHHH! Ambiance always lively and music is always great! Parking is always a journey, you either get there early enough to park on one out of the five spots in front of the restaurant or you strut your stuff from the parking deck/lot to the restaurant. Either way you will pay over $10. I was excited to try the chicken satay again but flavor lacked the first impression *pzaz*. Everything else, the calamari, mofongo, grilled octopus, chicharrón y tostones…it was on point! The only reason I did not give a 5-star is because the place was a bit louder than usual. I was having the hardest time communicating with our server and he was really not into it either. Not sure if it was just a bad combination of soft-spoken and hard-of-hearing but def awkward as heck. Other than that….keep it up!! Bocao is becoming a Queen City staple!
