As I'm preparing to leave Chicago in a couple of hours, I had to get packed and ready to check out of the Ida B. Wells Hostel (I highly recommend) and found myself with no time to venture out on a specifically "Vegan" quest for breakfast. As is the case with most hostels I've stayed at, they do offer free breakfast, but the Vegan offerings are practically nonexistent, with only doughy bagels and jelly, or granola/cereal with no plant-based milk offered. I prefer to eat nothing. Nevertheless, there happens to be a wonderful café immediately adjacent to the hostel - Cafecito! And they have "Vegan Specialties" and I've made a point of uploading a photo of that portion of the menu here, as I literally wolfed down the Vegan Pan con Bistec I ordered, along with a large coffee (their coffee is da' bomb!) And the woman who took my order made me my coffee fresh and graciously added the two packets of organic stevia, that I always carry with me on trips, along with the soy milk that offer as well. They have a total of nine (9) items on their Vegan menu, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, including background music playing at just the right level, plenty of tables and chairs for solo diners, couples and groups, where you can sit and work, socialize or map out your tour of Chicago. I definitely recommend them if you happen to be in the area.
Pros: Nine Vegan options on the menu, Great service!,...
Read moreFor coffee, lunch, a snack, or dessert, Cafecito is the perfect spot. The food is nicely done, and the sandwiches are quite appealing. With many choices, it's hard to miss. I try to get something different each time. If you cannot decided, start with the Cubano, which is rich with flavors, the way the sandwich should be. Coffees are brewed to perfect and service is quite prompt. It's well run, that's clear, and quite nicely oriented to the customers, who respond by supporting this place It's often full of people, but it never feels crowded. The space itself has a nice assortment of tables and chairs for groups of various sizes or solitary visits. Service is at the counter, so plan to pay upfront, get your order number, and find a place. After putting things down, you can head back and probably find your order ready. It's that prompt. If you arrive at a busy lunchtime, don't despair. The staff keeps things moving, so that even lines that extend into the hall outside the door move quickly. The food and service is not compromised at those busy times, at least not in my experience. This particular Cafecito is perfect for this part of the city, and you might try other locations just to sample the food. Again, the sandwiches are a highlight, and the desserts are...
Read moreOur experience wasn’t as great as other people describe, I ordered a capuchino and they served me 2 Oz of black coffee with white foam on Top, my partner ordered a café con leche and they serve it in a huge cup, the place says is Cuban but it has nothing like Cuban culture you can find better places with true café con leche and capuchino in Miami. On top of all that they didn’t even care to ask if we wanted sugar or not, when I got up to add sugar to my “capuchino” there was none at the sugar stand, I had to go to the person who was making the coffee to ask for sugar and she kept telling me to get sugar from the stand when there was none, she ended up giving me some in a separate cup for me to add to my coffee, when I sat down I spotted two common sugar jar under the sweets stand and I got up picked them up and place them at the sugar stand. As I was sitting mother lady complained about her “cappuccino” cup being empty and they say “that is the way cappuccino is made”. We had ordered sandwiches and mine came out with the bread all wet and greasy too soft to enjoy it with fingers. Thankfully I am just a tourist and I don’t have to come here again. Go on...
