On my last evening of an 8 days and 7 nights work trip there here was finally no hustle and bustle, overwhelming crowd. I was finally able to get a nice table in the dining area to myself and my waitress, dressed perfectly for Oktoberfest, was sweet, kind, friendly and helpful! The fish and chips plate was the best I'd ever had- fresh and filling. I had the Neimi (spelling could be off) Pinot Noir twice throughout the trip, and it's fantastic.
Buuuuut... When this place is crowded, you stand the chance of being the only black in the room, and bar service is near impossible. The big guy was awesome, the older white guys totally ignored me. Twice it took wonderful, kind, white gentlemen patrons to get the bartender's attention for me to order.
The ambiance is "Untouchable", literally, very similar feel to the movie, old school Chicago gangster. If you have a large crowd, they have a semi-private seating area. Makes no sense they don't provide table service back there, especially with a crowd spending tens of thousands of dollars during a week long...
Read moreClassy, old timey feeling place. The Manhattans were strong, the whiskey sour, on the other hand, didn't taste that way. We got a table quickly on a weekend afternoon for drinks. It's a nice place to sit with friends between museums or while shopping, and worth wandering through the Drake Hotel lobby (I've heard the Drake is pretty haunted, if you're intrigued by that sort of thing). Service wasn't very attentive, and was a bit rude, maybe because we were on the younger side compared to the rest of the clientele, and we were not in fancy-dress (I mean really, who cares about that, at least in the afternoon in Chicago, it's not the 50s). The drinks were about $15 pre-tax and tip, so I'd go for the experience, maybe with out-of-town visitors, but it's certainly not going to be my spot. The drinks were...fine, adequate, not interesting or innovative or special or even very strong, so not much starrage there, but as an experience and place to sit while walking/sighteeing/shopping/museuming in north downtown it squeaks by into the...
Read moreThis bar is soooo fun. My husband and I usually stop in for a drink or two while staying at The Drake over the Christmas holidays as is our tradition. I love the dark paneled walls and the paintings. It’s such a unique place. We tried to go for dinner last week with my husband’s siblings and spouses but they were way to busy , so we ate at a restaurant down the street. This was kind of sad as I was really excited about their menu, but what can you do? Maybe next year! We came back after we ate for drinks and it had cleared out by then so we were able to sit down no problem. The guys all had delicious whiskey cocktails while us girls had vodka based. I’m more of a whiskey drinker and while my drink was good I definitely have to admit that I had drink envy after trying...
