Pros: Quaint country atmosphere, Delicious donuts, Great customer service
Cons: None in my state
The Review:
My family and I consider ourselves as Donut Connoisseurs, being that we live so close to a drive thru Krispy Kreme, we often are able to have hot and fresh donuts at our sticky fingertips. However, even with our hometown favorite popping out hot made donuts every day, they fall short to Sandy Pony Donuts.
I first heard the reviews on TikTok as I researched Chincoteague before we arrived on our vacation. I wanted to make sure that we tried all the good food places and got all the treats we wanted while we were there. Like all locations we first visit, we keep an open mind and always an honest attitude.
Super simple building with a walkway that you order at the windows, similar to a hometown ice cream place. We ordered the 12 donuts of all assorted flavors and brought them back to our cabin.
When I tell you, the flavors of these donuts had our family completely silent the entirety that we ate them. Innovating flavors that weren’t your typical flavors at a donut shop, hot and fresh donuts, and the smell filled the cabin with a sweetness that was unmatched. Oh my goodness the TEXTURE, these were the softest donuts that held their shape and didn’t collapse we’ve ever tried. It was melt in your mouth, just flowing with softness, flavor and sweetness.
We ordered there like regulars the remainder of our time. When we left, we waved goodbye and shed tears we would have to go without once back home. My youngest still brings them up after two months of being away from Chincoteague. My mouth is watering right now from just thinking about them.
Sandy Pony Donuts is worth the hype. It lives up to the expectations you have from a hometown donut shop. The customer service is top tier and friendly. If you’re planning on staying in Chincoteague and want delicious donuts, look no further.
Sandy Pony Donuts…we will be back soon (and hopefully moving in a few years)…so can’t wait to make you our new...
Read moreLove Love Love! This was my first visit to the Sandy Pony Donuts located on Chincoteague Island, VA. Yes, the place with the swimming ponies. After a much anticipated wait for them to open for the season, I can honestly state it was worth the wait. Sandy Pony Donuts is a must-stop for all donut aficionado!!
As a food blogger (@delmarvalicious), I am always on the lookout for great eats. After a quick review of my Instagram account this past Saturday morning, I saw that they opened at 7am. It was 650am at the time so I figured why not make the 20 minute drive for these donuts I have heard so much about. I arrived shortly after they opened and there was only a pair of bike riders ahead of me. After a short wait, I was up.
I went with 1/2 dozen and a cup of coffee. I selected a Misty Thin (mint glaze & mini chocolate chips), Thin Mint (mint glaze & oreo), 2- Porky Pony ( glaze, cinnamon sugar & bacon), Charlie Brown (peanut butter glaze & mini chocolate chips) and a Big Pearl ( powdered sugar). However, while waiting for these tasty treats and still reviewing the menu, I added 6 additional donuts.
The second half dozen included a Glazed donut, Blueberry Pie (blueberry glaze, graham cracker & powdered sugar), Yabba Dabba Doo-Nut (glaze & Fruity Pebbles cereal), Surfer Dude (glaze, cinnamon sugar & mini chocolate chips), Sand Dune (cinnamon sugar), and finally, a Sea Foam ( glaze & coconut).
By the time I got to my car and took a few photos before leaving... just in case I decided to eat and drive... the crowds had already started to form. I believe the word is out on this place!
The ride home was a lesson in restraint. Since the sweet treats are custom made, they are piping-hot. I opened both boxes so there wouldn't be too much steam to possibly mess them up. To conclude this already long-winded rant about donuts... if you love donuts and are anywhere near Chincoteague Island or happen to be vacation there, put Sandy Point Donuts on your foodie bucket list. You won't be...
Read moreWe were in Chincoteague for a short holiday and various online guides raved about Sandy Pony Donuts. So I decided to get some donuts and a couple of smoothies one morning. The line was very long at 9 am and that gave me a little sense of hope that this place would live up to all the hype. I ordered half a dozen donuts of different varieties and one gluten free donut as well as two smoothies. There isn't a place to sit and eat so I brought it back to our rental and we ate it. While we had ordered several different flavors (lemon, chocolate, CowTail etc) the overwhelming taste was simply sugar and a cloying sweetness at that. The kids liked it which is why I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1. The same was true for the smoothies---just extreme sweetness and hardly any actual flavor. It was disappointing.
The line was long and the weather was hot so there wasn't time to linger (the poor staff looked like they were baking inside the little kitchen). So we left as soon as we got our order. Coming home I realized I had probably been overcharged ($24 for half a dozen donuts and 2 smoothies; the half dozen box actually only had 5 donuts in it). It is likely an honest mistake but it only added to the perception of an over-hyped and...
