As a NYC gringo that has lived many years south of the border, when I moved to San Diego, one of my main missions was to find the most authentically Mexican affordable eateries around town. I've hit up dozens of places in only my 1st week here & this place is getting high scores on authenticity. If you truly know Mexican food, you'll know it's different depending on the region/state of Mexico you're in. I can't put my finger on what region is influencing the menu here. It's possibly Baja California, the one region I don't know much about, but from the salsas alone you can taste true Mexico. The Verde is maybe the sweetest I've had, with a touch of what tasted like cucumber, or brine, & the red had hints of mole which seems largely missing from the SD scene from what I've seen so far. The staff is amazing and the front picnic tables are authentic SoCal, complete with a drive thru right next to you lol. That's probably the only negative, & I see it more as a sign of intuitive business practices, than a negative. It's small but you can dine in also. It's also more affordable than most it's competitors around town. Strong rec & I'll be...
Read moreI had an incredible experience at this Colima’s location about 2 weeks ago. First, I didn’t realize Colima’s had 2 locations — I’d only ever been to the one in North Park. Apparently, this is the original store. The female cashier was so, so nice to my friend and I when we came in.
We ordered an adobada vampiro, a salmon burrito w/ carne asada added, a jamaica, and hot carrots & jalapeños. The vampiro was massive when it came out! It was super tasty, too! The guacamole was extremely fresh and they gave plenty. The salmon burrito w/ carne asada was really great, too, although I have it to my friend.
What happened was I’d meant to order the salmon burrito with carne asada substituted for the salmon, but instead they gave it to me added in due to a miscommunication. I asked to see if it could be remade, and offered to pay, but the cashier told me to not worry about it. It was super nice of her to do.
Also, the salsas are delicious here, and they have 6 distinct flavors to choose between. The avocado salsa and habanero are probably my favorite. Overall, this Colima’s had great portions, great service, and tasty food! I definitely...
Read moreI have to say this is probably one of the most disappointing burritos I've had in my life. Had the Carne asada burrito, and was thoroughly disappointed in the taste and quality of it. It's 10 dollars for a burrito after tax WITH CASH.
The taste of the burrito was seasoned in an odd way that you normally wouldn't expect. Perhaps they cooked on the grill with something else and didn't clean it up-- regardless it did not taste good. The cuts on the meat were very low quality. Instantly I could tell that the meat that was edible was too chewy and had literal chunks of fat in a f*ing Carne asada burrito.
If you're going to inconvenience your customers by limiting their method of payment AND have food that is sub par relative to the many Mexican food establishments within a 1 mile radius-- something has to give.
Place felt very old and the food reflected just that. Quite frankly I didn't even finish my burrito (which I do every time) after biting into a large chunk of fat. Yeah no thanks.
I feel cheated out of my money and felt bad about what I ate. Needless to say, I will not be...
