Let's start with the food. As a vegetarian, finding a satisfying breakfast option can sometimes be a challenge, but Black Bear Diner exceeded my expectations. The veggie omelet I ordered was packed with fresh vegetables and the perfect amount of gooey cheese. The accompanying country potatoes were cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Every bite was bursting with flavor, leaving me completely satisfied.

The portion sizes were generous, and I left the diner feeling both satisfied and happy with the value I received for my money.

Read moreI have always liked BBD since it came here, even before in other towns & we’ve eaten there frequently. However tonight was one of the worst restaurant experiences we’ve had in many years. I understand with the pandemic I can’t expect decent service sometimes, but this was the worst. I ordered a small tri-tip dinner with mashed potatoes, my husband ordered a taco salad. We waited for a long time for our orders. When they finally came, my order was wrong & I had to send it back to be corrected. My husbands taco salad was a hot mess. The ground beef was over cooked& sloppily plated. Ranch dressing accompanied the salad, which I thought was odd, but ok. He tried it. We had to ask for utensils in order to eat. My husband asked for taco sauce for the salad as it was dry, he ended up with a couple of little containers of salsa. He could not finish the meal & left most of it there. I did take my tri-tip home. When the waiter finally refilled my iced tea he did not give me additional ice for my glass. The tea was warm. We also had to ask for our check. We did mention to the cashier our disappointment with our meals, she did kindly offered a discount which we declined as we had “eaten the steak”, but we won’t be going back to this location for awhile, hopefully they will get things under better control by that time. We left as soon as possible. I am very sorry for this review, but hopefully management will take this under review & correct...

Black Bear Diner – Citrus Heights: A Disappointing Visit from a Loyal Fan
I’ve always loved Black Bear Diner. My first visit was at the Redding location while traveling from the Bay Area for work—it was an amazing experience with great food, friendly service, and a warm atmosphere. I even took my son to the Elk Grove location the very next day, and we both became big fans of the brand.
But today, I visited the Citrus Heights location, and I left feeling very disappointed.
I ordered a veggie omelet with hashbrowns. The hashbrowns weren’t fresh, so I politely asked the server if they could make a fresh batch. She was kind and passed the request along—but the cook gave me a very disrespectful look and moved his lips in a way that seemed like he was mocking or saying something rude. It felt very uncomfortable. You can check the cameras—it was unprofessional and unnecessary.
There was no welcoming energy, no smiles—none of the service I’ve experienced at other locations. And the food? The omelet was plain and underwhelming, just basic eggs with a few veggies. Nothing special.
I’m not just complaining—I’m sharing this because I care. Black Bear has always felt like a place I could trust for good food and respectful service. I hope management will take this seriously and make sure this location reflects the same high standards that made me fall in love with the brand in the first place.
