Absolutely horrible. A friend and myself went for lunch on a Sunday - the restaurant was essentially empty with the exception of 3 small tables. One table already had received their food. We ordered and proceeded to wait 30 minutes with no food. The server never came back over to refill drinks or chips, wandered around the bar and restaurant, did not attend to the other customers, and never mentioned a reason for our wait. He swept the floor (poorly) and was inspecting random things behind the bar. I ordered the city tacos ($10.50 for 2) and my friend ordered the chicken chimichanga ($15). When he finally brought the food out, he abruptly turned around and took the plates back into the kitchen as the tacos appeared to be made with the wrong shells. When he came back, we asked for to-go boxes because we had to leave. He seemed confused and gave us our bills - my friend, who purchased the $15 chimichanga, was charged $23 as her bill noted that she got nachos (she didn't). When we questioned the charge, they told her there was an upcharge for chicken. This made no sense since the menu indicated no upcharge as the chimichanga was not vegetarian, hence no upcharge for the meat. The charge also indicated nachos - not addition of chicken. We were then given containers to go before he took the bill back to the manager. Instead of coming up to us after addressing the issue, he realized he had another table and went up to them first. After he came back he blamed the system for the charge, rather than their mistake. He then waited another several minutes before ringing out our order. After getting to eat the food, I would say the city tacos were average at best. The meat was tough and dry; considering these were almost $11 that is ridiculous. I would not eat here again, and we advised others we know to...
Read moreDecided to try this place after a few months of being open. The parking validation and happy hour drink prices were very fair. But unfortunately that's about as far I can go for hugely positive stuff.
My friend and I sat down at the bar and ordered our 2 beers. The draft selection isn't thorough, but it made sense for a Mexican-themed bar. For the second round, I asked the bartender if he recommended any of the Platform beers on draught, to which he said that he hadn't tried any. I'm a personal believer that wait staff should know what they are serving, so that was a little disappointing. When he brought over the tasters, one of them tasted like the keg went bad already, which is concerning considering Platform is a local beer. Meanwhile, my friend got the classic margarita which tasted like cheap tequila and not very inspired.
Meanwhile, it took 25-30 minutes for our tacos to arrive, which considering the restaurant was half full seemed a bit strange. That's okay, staff is still learning which I understand. The carnitas was a little dry but had decent flavor. The barbacoa was better, but we both noticed that it was just corned beef with the braising liquid. It even tasted like they used the spice packet that came with the corned beef. Not very authentic in my honest opinion, and it created conflicting flavor profiles. The fried beans were the best thing on the plate. The Mexican rice was good, but seemed like it had frozen carrots and peas from the supermarket. I would expect better from a new restaurant trying to establish itself in University Circle.
Overall I was unimpressed. I may try this out in a few months when things seem to be really getting together. I just hope this place lasts that long...
Read moreFirst time customers... I'll start off with the bad and go to the good... The check was placed on the table minutes before the food arrived... and we were advised to scan the barcode on the card and leave a 5-star review... in order to get $5 off of our meal... This is a really bad situation! No idea how many customers were paid to leave a 5-star review for Tacologist, but the number is definitely not zero! The waiter was very smooth with the introduction of the card and explaining the discount! Made it very very awkward during bill pay because it was definitely not a 5-star experience.
We arrived at 7:54 and upon entering, we were greeting with being asked if we were ordering food or drinking. We said food and were told that the kitchen is closing in 20 minutes. We asked if it was ok or if we should come back at an earlier time, to which we were told it was fine. It took almost that full 20 minutes for the waiter to ask us our order! The waiter's attitude was sub par and emanated an "I really don't care about anyone or anything" vibe. We received our nachos and queso before we received glasses of water, silverware or napkins. Bad service all around. It was not busy, but there were three other tables with patrons waiting for food.
The good. The food was amazing! Shout out to the chefs for staying late and making great dishes! The elote, tacos, and rice were perfect and the flavors were rich and addicting! The food absolutely saved...
