To whom it may concern, I am writing to you to share my experience at your restaurant, Kooma in West Chester, with hopes that this experience doesn't happen to any other customer. I will start by saying I am a huge fan of Kooma and come about 3-5 times a month. On this particular evening, Tuesday (5/2/17) our experience was a complete disappointment. When we were seated, we ordered 4 glasses of wine and some waters. It took about 26 minutes for our wine to reach the table. My colleagues drink took so long she asked if she could get a red wine instead of the white, but the server said she couldn't switch because the drinks were being made. That was the first issue, but we said it wasn't a big deal and she drank the white. As a waitress myself, if a customer ever requested a drink change, we would immediately accommodate to what they want, after all, they are paying for their wine and their experience. Then, we ordered calamari that took over 35 minutes to come out, but we assumed the server forgot to put it in or perhaps it was his first night serving, because it was a slow Tuesday evening. Which then meant that my sweet potato roll and shrimp tempura roll were both cold and hard when they came out. Then, our sushi came out on a huge platter, instead of our own plates. We all ordered separately and never said we wanted it on one plate. A different server came over and took the platter back and separated our individual orders so we could all finally eat. Then, a colleague of mine found a long hair entangled in her sushi. We notified our server and he took the sushi to the manager who then, instead of going to the back kitchen to examine the hair, he slowly pulls it out in front of everyone eating, and other tables where all looking with a face of disgust, as they are trying to enjoy their own sushi from that same kitchen. The manager then comes to our table and puts the hair close to her face and says, "I'm sorry you found a hair in your food, but it's blonde and you have blonde hair." Who says that? First of all, its was not hers because it was entangled in the sushi. Then he brings her out a new roll, but only one roll... she had ordered two. Finally, after all of this my friends husband asked for a box to put his leftover chicken teriyaki and he finds a curly long black hair in the leftovers, after he ate the entire meal with it in there. At this point I was waiting for the hidden cameras to come out and us to be told we were on a prank TV show. We call the manager over AGAIN and show him. He then takes it back for about 5 minutes then returns to table to say that the hair was "actually part of the food they use to bake, but looks a lot like hair." or some complete bogus reason. Sir it was hair, we all held our camera flashlights up to it, it was a long curly black hair. I am hoping no one else has an experience like this, because it was a complete waste of $128. The way the manager handled it could have completely changed our experience. Even if the hair was the same color as the customers hair, you do not say that. Thank you for your time and I hope this issue can be addressed so it doesn't happen again. I would like to redo our visit with a better experience. Jordan...
Read moreWe ate an early dinner at Kooma on a Saturday evening. We ordered several sushi rolls, a couple pieces of nigiri, and a bottle of sake. The food and drink was wonderful. The sushi was incredibly fresh tasting and the rolls had been prepared so that the rice had the perfect amount of stickiness to keep everything together nicely....something that's hard to come by in the Midwest.
We noticed that some of the menu items had the same names as the unique items from Mr. Sushi in Dublin. We inquired about this and were informed that the sushi chef from Mr. Sushi is friends with the Kooma sushi chef and they shared techniques and recipes.
The restaurant is very small: maybe seats 25 not including the bar which seats another 5 or so. The lighting is dim and the decor is dark, creating an intimate atmosphere. Despite the relatively rowdy group sitting near us, noise was not a problem. I would recommend this restaurant to the hip, urban crowd looking for a relatively private location to share some excellent sushi.
The only complaint I have is that upon exiting the restaurant, my wife and I were overwhelmed by the smell of either rotting or old fish. This made our stomachs turn just after thoroughly enjoying our dinner. I'm hoping that this was the trash behind the building that was wafting toward the entrance, but regardless of what it was, it needs to...
Read moreFirst and only time I will eat here. I REALLY wanted to like this place, it's been on my list of places to try for a while. To begin with it is quite overpriced for the portion sizes (see photo of the piece of salmon compared to my thumb, not even close in size and my hands are pretty small). The 2 pieces of Nigiri I got here equal the size of one piece from other sushi restaurants in Columbus and what I got here cost 2x as much. If you get the Nigiri be aware that they put Wasabi between the fish and the rice to hold it together (which was not mentioned on the menu or when ordering) so that completely ruined the taste for me. The roll I got said deep fried but only the fish in the roll was deep fried, that was not clear. Anywhere else I have gotten this roll, the whole roll has always been deep fried. And every question we asked the girl taking the order had no idea what the answer was (she was nice), so even trying to verify descriptions ect was difficult. Tobiko was ok, the quality of Salmon seemed ok but hard to tell bc of Wasabi, redsnapper in the roll was quite chewy. Last but not least only parking available is at a meter or a paid lot in front of North Market. So you are also going to pay for parking on top of the increased price of...
